The mission of the Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA) is to monitor the Massachusetts health care system and to provide reliable information and meaningful analysis for those seeking to improve health care quality, affordability, access, and outcomes. CHIA also acts as a principal repository for health care data collected by the state and is responsible for the Massachusetts All Payer Claims Database (APCD) and Acute Hospital Case Mix Database.
This is a full-time position, normally based in the Center’s office near Copley Square in Boston. The Center’s staff works on a hybrid model. All staff are expected to work in the Center’s Boston office on at least two designated days per week.
The Software Test Engineer (“Engineer”) is a key member of CHIA’s software Quality Assurance organization and our Data Operations and Technology team. To be successful in this role, you should have a working knowledge of software and test design, the capability to run through tests, and the ability to analyze the results. Ultimately, the engineer should be result-driven, have good communication skills, and up-to-date knowledge of software programming and software test design.
Specifically, the Engineer will:

  • Review software requirements documents such as BRD’s and User Stories, design, and document test cases, create test files, execute tests, and record the results of those tests.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute quality assurance/testing activities including manual and automated functional, integration, regression, and performance testing of CHIA’s software and data products.
  • Conduct QA testing for software programs and web applications.
  • Build and execute queries against data in MS SQL and Postgres Database Servers to examine and verify the completeness, accuracy, and consistency of that data.
  • Perform troubleshooting of data issues and identify resolutions to technical, process, and logic problems
  • Provide critical thinking, problem solving, and attention to detail and quality.

Preferred Qualifications at Hire:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher. Equivalent work experience may be applied to education.
  • Three years’ experience performing quality assurance activities.
  • Ability to work independently in a fully remote, hybrid, or in-person work environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of SDLC models.
  • Experience with Microsoft DevOps / Azure, healthcare data, and testing ETL code preferred.
  • Experience designing and running performance and/or load tests.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of HIPAA policies and working with sensitive data.
  • Demonstrated success working collaboratively as part of an engineering team with diverse skillsets.
  • Commitment to complying with data security requirements and ability to assist in identifying potential data security risks.
  • Effective at managing competing priorities and can work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills: verbal and written, along with excellent test documentation skills.
  • Ability to stay well organized, detailed and process oriented when under pressure to meet development deadlines.

This position will remain open until filled. The anticipated full-time salary range for this position is $80,000-$95,000 commensurate with experience.
