ORGANIZATION

Partnerships for Trauma Recovery (PTR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to healing the psychosocial and psychosocial impacts of trauma among international survivors of human rights abuses, forced displacement resulting from war, torture, persecution related to identity and beliefs, gender-based violence and other forms of interpersonal violence. PTR provides culturally and contextually responsive, trauma-informed and linguistically accessible psychological and psychosocial care for international survivors of human rights abuses.

POSITION

Reporting to the Interpreter Program Manager, the primary responsibility of a PTR Interpreter is to provide direct interpretation between clients and service providers whether it’s on an individual or group level. PTR interpreters help foster effective cross-cultural communication and participate in reducing stigma related to mental health needs resulting from trauma and loss among newcomer communities. Interpreters must have a strong commitment for promoting human rights, peace and psychosocial wellbeing, as well as the ability to hear stories of extensive trauma and bear witness to significant emotional distress.

This position will be required to offer in-person interpretation services as well as remote interpretation services for telehealth meetings utilizing the phone and/or Zoom Health for conducting confidential video or audio conference calls. Interpretation is mostly provided in consecutive mode with some opportunities to interpret in simultaneous mode. In order to provide stability for clients, we ask for at least a 4 month work commitment from interpreters.

Assignments are typically within the business hours of Monday - Friday 8 am to 8 pm. This is a 1099 independent contractor position with no guaranteed number of work hours per week (as needed basis).

Provision of Interpretation:

  • Available to interpret in-person and remotely via phone and Zoom Health.
  • Provide clear, interpretation during client meetings and interactions with PTR service providers.
  • Collaborate with PTR service providers to coordinate and schedule client meetings as needed.
  • Collaborate with PTR service providers, eliciting feedback and examining ways to improve on collective work.
  • Regularly and consistently track interpretation hours and submit monthly invoices.
  • Communicate and respond to emails and calls within 48 hours.
  • Translate written documents such as, but not limited to, flyers and outreach materials from English to other working language(s) as needed.

Required Skills

  • Native or fully fluent speaker of your working language.
  • Reading and writing in English and your working language (this excludes languages without a written form).
  • Relaying the style and tone of the original message, and converting concepts from source to target language.
  • Flexibility and adaptability.
  • Strong capacity for maintaining confidentiality.
  • Cultural humility, sensitivity to cultural nuance and respectfulness of diversity of identities.
  • Excellent concentration and rendering spoken messages accurately, quickly, and clearly.
  • Excellent time management and punctual.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting; willingness to take feedback and make adjustments.

Required Experience

  • Experience working as an interpreter

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working as an interpreter in a mental health, healthcare, or social services setting.
  • Prior interpreter training certificate and/or certification.
  • Cultural understanding of the local population that speaks the non-English working language.
  • Experience working with diverse, displaced, and/or under resourced communities.
  • Comfort navigating Google Suite (spreadsheets and docs).
