Organization Overview:
Legal Prep Charter Academy (“Legal Prep”) is Chicago’s first and only legal-themed high school, putting diverse, low-income students on the path for college success. Legal Prep opened its doors on August 20, 2012 in West Garfield Park and began offering free, college preparatory education to students in a community with primarily low performing schools. Legal Prep is consistently the highest rated high school in a two mile radius and has over 65% of its alumni in college. Legal Prep has entered its eleventh year of operation during the 2022-2023 school year and serves approximately 270 students. As the name indicates, Legal Prep has a legal-themed curriculum and uses this unique theme to engage its diverse population of students in their learning and teach skills that will make our students successful in college and life. Legal Prep also works closely with the Chicago legal community to provide additional resources, exposure, and skills that complement our curriculum and promote analytical reasoning and critical thinking.

Position Description:
The Special Programs Coordinator (“Coordinator”) has overall responsibility for the major student enrichment programs and supports the fundraising efforts, marketing campaigns, and other external affairs and student experiences. In this role, the Coordinator will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer and Development & Special Programs Manager on program management, communication and marketing efforts, and development initiatives. Given the diversity of this role and team, this position requires a unique combination of student compassion and corporate salesmanship. This role reports to the Director of Development.

Program Management:

The Assistant will oversee the Mentor Program, Student Internship Program, and the school’s flagship Law Program. The Coordinator’s role with the Mentor Program is to implement all logistics and mentor and mentee management for the monthly one-on-one mentor program, serving 50 students annually. The Student Internship Program builds and maintains internship partnerships as well as lead the internship seminar class. The Coordinator will assist with the Law Program through school wide communication, teacher support, and monthly program logistics. This position will also support other team members who are spearheading Legal Prep’s parent engagement, community service and outreach, student engagement, and other special programs such as professionalism field trips and the monthly community legal clinic.

Communication & Marketing:

This role will also assist in social media marketing, bi-weekly progress reports/newsletters, and other communication and marketing with corporate and legal partnerships, volunteers, community members, and students and families. The Assistant will also be tasked with supporting student recruitment and communication database management.

While there will be a focus on the business side, the Assistant must be as comfortable working directly with students and coordinating school programs as they are establishing partnerships and marketing the organization to attorneys, other downtown professionals, and supporters. Organizational development, program management, teaching, and oversight of administrative duties are among the diverse roles of this position. In addition, the Assistant should be a person of vision, high energy, initiative, creativity, and follow through.

Desired skills, experiences, and qualities:
The qualified candidate for this position should have at minimum a Bachelor’s degree.

Additional qualifications include experience working in either a school, non-profit, or for-profit organization, with particular experience and interest in:

  • Marketing and communications
  • Youth program development and management
  • Volunteer recruitment and retention, and
  • Student teaching and/or management.

The qualified candidate should have superior organizational skills, the ability to manage student programs, and the ability to identify and develop a rapport with potential donors and volunteers.

Other qualifications and experience should include:

  • Commitment to the organization’s mission
  • Experience with strategic planning and junior board development
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to apply principles and practices of sound management and supervisory methods
  • Experience in a variety of computer applications, including Salesforce, word processing, databases and spreadsheets
  • Experience with the Salsa Labs platform is a plus

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $35,000.00 - $45,000.00 per year
