Nature and Scope:
Under the direction of the Sports Program Director(s), the Sports Instructor II is responsible for implementing sport specific training and skill development. Sports instructor demonstrate and explain the skills and rules of particular sports, like golf or tennis, to individuals or groups. They help beginners learn basic rules, stances, grips, movements, and techniques of a game. Sports instructor II help experienced athletes to sharpen their skills. This position must perform duties in accordance with the policies, goals, mission, values and objectives established by the Metropolitan Atlanta YMCA, Branch Strategic Plan, Safety Protocols Including COVID, and Member Services Guidelines and Non-negotiables. Emphasis will be placed on member service, program knowledge, member/staff safety, and communication with members and staff.
Minimum Requirements:
- Must have a background in coaching, instructing, and minimum two years’ of competitive experience in a related field or equivalent preferred.
- Must have required sport specific certifications, (example: USA Gymnastics Level II)
- Ability to motivate, coach and lead participants
- Knowledge of how to instruct the sport including the rules and technique
- High degree of Human Relations Skills.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with participants, parents, volunteers and staff.
- Required certifications: Safe Sport and CDC Heads Up Concussion course online; Must obtain any other certifications required for the position within 30 days of being hired.
- Put the Metro Atlanta YMCA Youth Sports Philosophy into effect
- Have current evidence of successful completion of biennial training in CPR/First Aid.
- Excellent verbal/written communication skills.
- Criminal background check.

Responsibilities:
- Provides instruction in sport activities.
- Participates in special events and activities related to their sport.
- Maintain effective relationships with schools, parents, participants, and other groups.
- Create an environment that provides various activities and instruction to support program goals.
- Attends staff meetings and approved training as required.
- Conduct assessments of program participants.
- Perform other duties as related to the delivery of a quality sports program.
- Participate in the YMCA annual Why It Matters Campaign.

- Implements the YMCA safety protocol both related to COVID and branch operations.
- Implement wellness checks and provide a leadership role in ensuring member/staff adherence to the safety protocols, with a commitment to positive member and staff safety.
