Job description
The SUN-GAZETTE SPORTS REPORTER, EXETER, CALIF. (TULARE COUNTY):
ABOUS US: The Sun-Gazette is an independently owned weekly newspaper in California’s San Joaquin Valley, but specifically in Tulare County. The newspaper covers all pertinent topics, focusing mostly on the various governmental entities throughout Tulare County. We publish every Wednesday in print and daily online at thesungazette.com. In addition to the weekly paper executive editor Paul Myers and publisher Reggie Ellis also produce a weekly podcast titled The Paper Trail Podcast.
The Sun-Gazette team is currently made up of an executive editor, editor, assistant editor, two general assignment reporters, a sports reporter, front office manager, bookkeeper, delivery driver and two circulation employees.
DESCRIPTION: Local news is what’s sorely lacking in America today, and we are here to cover it. If you’re looking for a gig that gives you the glory of covering March Madness, or the NFL, this isn’t the job for you, and with all due respect, we don’t want you. But if you’re looking to put in the work of covering high school sports, youth features and community, then you’re in the right place.
This isn’t your grandpa’s newsroom where the building is bursting at the seams with wanting reporters. Instead, this is the local news team investigating their own stories and often taking their own photos. It is a difficult but fulfilling grind for a passionate reporter wanting to make an impact in rural California communities.
EXPECTATIONS: It is expected that this person be a team player and help coworkers with their workload when possible. Skeleton crew newsrooms have no room for selfish reporters who are unwilling to help their teammates. Other expectations are as follows:
· Must be willing to write 1-2 stories per day (sometimes more) of considerable length according to the AP Style guide;
· Must have a command of journalistic, sports style of writing;
· Must be comfortable interviewing players, coaches, school officials, etc.;
· Must be willing to learn/expand on knowledge of sports photography;
· Must be conscientious about communicating with the editor when stories fall through;
· Must be willing to pitch stories to the editor and assistant editor and give feedback or a different point of view on other stories discussed during the meeting;
· Must be willing to work nights and the occasional weekend at high school sporting events;
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: While a bachelors degree in journalism is not required, a degree in a related field will do, but it is preferred. Preferred experience is as follows:
· Preferred experience with Adobe Suite programs InDesign and Photoshop;
· Preferred experience with Canon camera products;
· Preferred experience with sports terminology, rules and strategies.
STARTING SALARY: The starting salary for this position is $36,000/yr to be determined on experience. When considering this salary, keep in mind that California housing prices and services vary greatly by region. While housing along the coast is historically astronomical, housing and services in the Central Valley, specifically Tulare County, are much more affordable.

Benefits:
