Working as Maintenance Aide in our Public Works department a great way to get outside and earn money helping keeping Redmond beautiful and running smoothly.

If you are new in your construction or maintenance career, a summer position with the City of Redmond gives you chance to show us your hustle, work ethics, teamwork, and how well you take direction from your team leaders and supervisors. In other words, if you show up and shine during your seasonal position, it puts you on a path towards other opportunities with us or other organizations. Many full-time employees in Public Works started in one of our seasonal positions!

Our teams work a 4-10 schedule, giving you one business day off per week. We also offer flexibility for taking time off for job interviews or pre-planned summer vacations. So, if you have been recently laid off or still looking for your permanent dream job, our seasonal positions are a great way to get outside, stay active, and earn some income while you keep searching.

The start date for these positions begins on April 3 and will continue through September 29, 2023.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

Some of the duties you may be doing include:

  • Manual labor such as hand digging, weed eating, raking, edging, and other means of mechanical vegetation control.
  • Litter pick-up.
  • Driving work 1-ton work vehicles
  • Cleaning and repairing trails and grounds.
  • Performing various maintenance at public facilities.
  • Traffic control in a work zone of a city right-of-way.
  • Cleaning and painting fire hydrants and/or roadway curbs.
  • Installing water meters.
  • Using standard hand tools (screw drivers, saws, hammers, shovel, pitchfork, rake, blowers, weed eaters, and walk behind mowers).

HOURS and DURATION:
  • Monday – Friday (40 hrs. /wk.), generally 6:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Positions start April 3 through June 30 dependent upon specific work group needs and continue through September 30.

QUALIFICATIONS


EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience in public works maintenance, general maintenance, or other related work experience is preferred but not required.
  • Mechanical aptitude and knowledge of/experience with relevant power and hand tools.
LICENSES and REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older and have a valid driver's license by date of hire.
  • Must have a driving record that meets City standards.
  • Possession of a valid flagging card and/or an adult first aid/CPR card is desirable.
  • Successful applicants must provide own steel-toed, safety boots (City will provide 50% toward that purchase, not to exceed $100).
SELECTION PROCESS:
  • All candidates must participate in a skill testing assessment at the Public Works Maintenance & Operations Center to determine basic abilities with:
    • Operating a line trimmer
    • Backing up a 1-ton vehicle
    • Shoveling
  • Same day offers may be made to candidates who successfully pass the skills testing and the supervisor evaluation following the tests. All offers are contingent upon passing a background and reference checks.
  • Skills Testing/Interviews will be March 22.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Outdoor work environment subject to seasonal heat and adverse weather conditions driving a vehicle and operating equipment to conduct work.
  • Exposure to traffic, noise, hazardous materials and fumes.
  • Incumbents are required to lift up to 50 pounds, bend, twist, stoop, push, pull, stand, and/or walk over rough and uneven ground.
  • Position requires physical stamina, manual dexterity, hearing and visual acuity.
