Job description
The Sr. Director of Business Development will play an integral role in a business-critical function that directly impacts Ovid’s mission of boldly transforming the lives of individuals with rare neurological diseases. The candidate will work closely with the senior leadership and the research and development team of Ovid to define and execute on the company’s strategic priorities and will partner across the organization on critical initiatives in support of Ovid’s corporate strategy. The Sr. Director will identify transformational opportunities for the company and will be responsible for, leading a broad scope of business development activities, including evaluation of in-licensing opportunities, due diligence processes, negotiation and execution of strategic transactions (e.g. collaborations, in and out licensing, equity investment or acquisition opportunities).
- Support the development of Ovid’s partnering and acquisition strategy, and work closely with other team members and research and development to deliver on a broad and novel business development agenda
- Manage several projects and effectively partner with cross functionally (e.g. R&D, commercial, manufacturing) on developing each business case
- Lead cross-functional teams to identify areas of growth and potential collaboration opportunities.
- Develop business cases for various partnering/investment opportunities, including deal-specific financial analysis (accounting for strategic, financial, legal and tax implications)
- Run the full life-cycle of a transaction:
- Lead cross-functional teams throughout deal cycle
- Partner closely and proactively with the research and development team
- Coordinate and lead detailed diligence processes
- Lead structuring, negotiation and execution
- Work closely with legal counsel on drafting and negotiation of term sheets and agreements
- Where appropriate, work closely with Investment Bankers hired to advise the Company on transactions
- Deliver compelling, audience-specific scientific & business presentations
- Establish highly effective relationships with internal stakeholders and senior management
- Ensure internal and external communications of the Company’s strategy, Represent Ovid externally, including at partnering and industry conferences promoting Ovid as a partner of choice and develop collaborative relationships across the industry
- Demonstrated record of business development and corporate strategy leadership within the pharmaceutical / biotech industry. 10+ years of life sciences corporate/business development experience (industry or professional services)
- PhD in Life Sciences Required, Neuroscience a plus
- MBA, or JD a plus
- Strategic and analytical thinker capable of shaping up critical workstreams
- Strong team player capable of leading by influence with experience navigating & influencing stakeholders at all levels
- Process-minded with the ability to operate strategically and adapt when appropriate to execute on defined goals in a timely manner
- Transaction experience as a BD/M&A professional (e.g. investment banking firms, law firm, venture funds, or private equity)
- Extensive experience in deal structure development, licensing partnership structuring, collaboration agreements negotiations, financial analyses, technical communication, transaction process management and project management
- Ability to manage drafting sessions and exhibit creative thinking and high attention to detail in such sessions
- Deep understanding of value frameworks and knowledge of financial evaluation techniques
- Ability to perform in-depth analyses of technologies, products, therapeutic areas and companies
- Knowledge of biotech industry intricacies (e.g. development risk, portfolio prioritization, approach to valuing pipeline assets, importance of regulation and intellectual property)
- Experience using databases: FactSet, EvaluatePharma, Cortellis, CapitalIQ, Pitchbook
- Actively networked and engaged in biopharma BD communities
- Professional gravitas necessary to make impactful first impressions
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills to communicate across all levels within the organization and to various audiences

For individuals hired to work in whole or in part in New York City, Ovid is required by law to provide in good faith, the minimum and maximum salary that we believe at the time of this posting is the appropriate pay range for this role. The compensation range for this role is $234,771 to $280,577 USD. Factors that may determine where within this range an applicant’s salary might be offered are including, but not limited to, skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. At Ovid, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. In addition, this position is eligible for participation in our discretionary annual bonus and equity plans.
