Job Description

Senior level Manufacturing Engineer integrated within a manufacturing environment that actively manages, participates, and designs engineering projects or programs. This role will manage moderate to large scope projects and medium to high complexity tasks which will have a significant impact on the business and manufacturing facility.

  • Use a range of standard, evolving or new company/industry techniques including computer analysis programs to analyze a technical problem and find likely causes and solutions.
  • Maintain familiarity with Parker Lord’s range of available products and recommend available product improvements when appropriate to solve technical problems.
  • Provide general technical manufacturing advice to team members and customers.
  • Cooperate with and achieve results with peers in other Division Units and in customer contacts; plan, organize and control assigned projects.
  • Learn new tools, techniques, computers, etc. as they become available. Use computers to create and use spreadsheets, documents and databases, perform analyses, etc.
  • Disposition for nonconforming development/production products. Follow through with all necessary documentation and reports. Assist in resolving manufacturing issues and roadblocks.
  • Lead the efforts in managing the AIM/NPC process. Ensure all engineering steps are completed before rolling product to production. Match the product design to the process capabilities quickly so that the cost can be frozen or standardized. Represent the plant at design reviews for NPI.
  • Continuously implement cost reductions through design changes on production product. All changes shall be validated using proper testing and/or analysis.

Design new product variations as appropriate to solve technical manufacturing problems; use knowledge of dynamics, mechanics, materials, processes, manufacturing techniques, etc. to optimize the design’s manufacturability and cost.
  • Implement and maintain a product engineering database consisting of design folders, tools, workspace, and customer application requirements. Maintain and improve general understanding of the state-of-the-art technology, products, materials, analytical and test techniques and/or processes pertinent to assignments.
  • Initiate Engineering Change Notices and lead the processing of them. Check and approve drawings to be issued. Create sketches and drawings; write memos and reports, communicate design and related information to team members, customers and vendors.
  • Conduct design reviews at plant when applicable. Give presentations and/or technical seminars to customers or other team members.
  • Conduct work in accordance with all applicable SOP’s and WI’s for product engineers.
  • Write engineering reports when applicable in accordance with NPI standards. Review written and verbal problem descriptions, information from customers, internal and external, to define the nature of a technical problem. Document important communications.
  • Scope and obtain service/laboratory/project requests both from internal and external sources.
  • Travel to customer sites when applicable to understand the applications. Maintain and improve knowledge of the major customers in assignment areas (i.e., methods of technically influencing customers; customer expectations relating to product performance).
  • Support the inventory reduction plan for the plant by defining the opportunities for obsolete inventory conversions and eliminating the changes that create obsolete inventory.
  • Evaluate manufacturing processes by designing and conducting research programs; applying knowledge of manufacturing process, automation, equipment fabrication, packaging tooling, and materials; conferring with equipment vendors; soliciting observations from operators.
  • Develop manufacturing processes by studying product requirements; researching, designing, modifying, and testing manufacturing methods and equipment and automation; conferring with equipment vendors.
  • Improve manufacturing efficiency by analyzing and planning workflow, space requirements, and equipment layout.
  • Assure product and process quality by designing testing methods; testing finished- product and process capabilities; establishing standards; confirming manufacturing processes.
  • Provides manufacturing decision-making information by calculating production, labor, and material costs; reviewing production schedules; estimating future requirements.
  • Prepare product and process reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Keep equipment operational by coordinating maintenance and repair services; following manufacturer's instructions and established procedures; requesting special service.
  • Maintain product and process data base by writing computer programs; entering data.

    REQUIRED
  • Bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering (or equivalent)
  • 3 to 5 years working within a manufacturing facility as Engineer or Technical Resource
  • Technical Knowledge: Recognized technical expertise; a comprehensive understanding of the state of the art of the division’s technology pertinent to his/her assignments; an awareness of emerging company and industry technology; and a demonstrated ability to apply these to carry out engineering projects.
  • Market Knowledge: A thorough knowledge of the major customers in his/her assignment areas in a technical sense (i.e., methods of technically influencing customers; customer expectations relating to standards of performances; contacts with key customer technical personnel, etc.). Ability to identify visible industry trends.
  • Company Knowledge: A comprehensive knowledge of the Company organization, policies, procedures and capabilities, knows who to talk to, and what it takes to effectively obtain results; an awareness of Corporate organization and capabilities.
  • Human Relations/Technical Management Skills: The ability to cooperate with, persuade and achieve results with peers in other company units and in customer contacts; the ability to plan, organize and control major projects often having difficult coordination requirements. Recognition within the department for leadership.
  • Knowledge of PLC’s and PC controlled manufacturing, material handling and packaging systems.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes. Includes automated processes, operator-controlled processes, machine controls.
  • Design engineering knowledge, outlining of concepts, development of PFMEA’s, and process flow development.
  • Experience with Kaizen workshops, reducing costs, developing lean improvements in our operations.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Computer skills, MS Word, Excel, Project, AutoCAD. PREFERRED
  • 6 to 8 years working within a manufacturing facility as Engineer or Technical Resource
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • Masters level Engineering or applicable Science degree (or equivalent)
  • Solid experience with PLC software – write, program, debug, adjust – Siemens, Allen Bradley
  • Solid experience with installation, repair and troubleshooting up to commissioning of equipment
  • Perform complete electrical, pneumatic control design analysis
  • Design complex machine control software
