About this role
As the Sr. Platform Product Manager – API, your primary responsibility is to oversee the development and management of an API platform that enables developers to easily build, test, and integrate with various systems and applications. Your role involves working closely with cross-functional teams, including developers, designers, and digital and commercial product managers, to ensure the API platform meets the needs of stakeholders and users. To be successful in this role, you should have experience in API product management, strong technical skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. Additionally, you should have a solid understanding of API architecture, RESTful API design principles, GraphQL and experience with API documentation tools. Strong communication, relationship building skills and leadership are essential in this role, since you will be working with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to ensure that API accessibility and interoperability. There are three key areas you will own and focus on: API-first, integration & interoperability, and marketplace & monetization.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensuring that all platform micro-services are API-first is a crucial aspect of the API Platform Product Manager role. This involves taking a holistic approach to the development of the platform and ensuring that all services are designed and developed with API accessibility in mind.
- Ensure that the API platform can seamlessly integrate with other systems and applications, enabling users to leverage the platform’s capabilities and features.
- Conducting market research to identify user needs and trends in the API platform space.
- Creating a product roadmap and strategy for the API platform
- Defining and prioritizing features, enhancements, and integrations for the API platform.
- Collaborating with development and product teams to ensure timely delivery of API platform releases and updates
- Defining and monitoring KPIs to measure the success of the API platform
- Working with sales and marketing teams to develop go-to-market strategies for the API platform
- Maintaining relationships with third-party developers and partners to ensure compatibility and integration with their systems
- Work collaboratively across functions and BU’s to ensure strategy is fully aligned, earning consensus and support from leaders and stakeholders
- Practice agile development methodologies
- Developing API design guidelines and standards to ensure consistency and quality across all APIs
- Ensuring that APIs are properly documented, versioned, and easily accessible to developers
- Ensuring that all platform services are API accessible and that APIs are updated and maintained regularly
- Coordinating with other teams, such as DevOps and security, to ensure that APIs are properly secured and meet all necessary compliance standards
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- 5+years of experience with PaaS and SaaS managing the product lifecycle of micro-services
- 5+ years of digital or software product experience including experience in product management and/or product owner role
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in Agile methodologies
Preferred Qualifications
Other qualifications you may have that would be beneficial in this role include:
- Master’s degree in applicable discipline highly desired.
- Agile Product Owner and/or Scrum Master certified or have “on the job” experience.
- Strong analytical, strategic, and creative problem-solving skills
- Pre-existing experience and/or demonstrated aptitude for learning digital tools such as Aha!, Jira, Confluence, Miro, LucidChart, etc
- Business, financial, and technical acumen, with focus on results and outcomes
- Business owner mentality, willingness to roll up sleeves to do whatever is necessary
- Effective communication with key stakeholders and ability to influence multiple stakeholders without direct authority.
- Passion about cloud and mobile technologies to generate strategic differentiation
- Be bold – identify and communicate misses where the team needs to pivot as well as underserved opportunities where the team should take greater risks and push forward
- Business acumen – desire to understand how every new feature delights customers and impacts the business
- Technology passion – innate drive to learn and test out new technologies
- Detail oriented – you can see the big picture but also sweat the small stuff
