Job description

Supernal is at the forefront of creating emerging mobility solutions that will foster the development of human-centered cities. We are designing a completely new electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft tailored to the mobility needs of future cities. This allows passengers a seamless intermodal journey that safely transports them to their final destination. We fuse research in autonomy, robotics, aviation and services to define a new category of mobility for the world’s communities. We believe in creative thinking and collaboration to help build a better mobility experience for everyone, improving people’s ability to move – whether for work or play.

What we do:

The Sr. SLAM Engineer focuses on developing computer vision and machine learning algorithms for visual and spatial understanding of scenes for an Urban Air Mobility (UAM) aircraft. Initial emphasis includes development of visual-inertial mapping and localization system that creates, and updates maps that are stable over long-term. Responsibilities include proposing, designing, and implementing scalable systems that are implemented on actual prototypes.

What you can do:

  • Design, development, and integration of Visual-Inertial SLAM systems

  • Development of evaluation metrics to confirm the efficacy of proposed algorithms

  • Contribute to a portfolio of patents, academic publications, and prototypes to demonstrate research value.

  • Work with a multi-disciplinary team to develop and integrate complex hardware/software systems

  • Contribute to architecture concepts, concept of operations, and technology trade studies

  • Other duties as assigned

  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience as a SLAM or Navigation Engineer (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered)

  • Experience with autonomous systems

  • Familiarity with recent advances in Semantic SLAM, Visual Place Recognition, Long-Term Localization, Distributed Mapping, etc.

  • Familiarity with basic computer vision concepts such as intrinsic and extrinsic calibrations, homogeneous coordinates, projection matrices, and epipolar geometry

  • Domain expertise in at least one of these areas: object detection & tracking, pose estimation, depth estimation, semantic & instance segmentation, video models, differentiable rendering, Neural Radiance Field (NeRF), 3D reconstruction, visual SLAM, structure from motion

  • Experience in the development of robust sensor calibration procedure which perform reliably in complex and unpredictable environments

  • Experience developing state estimation algorithms by using information from cameras, IMU/INS and other sensors

  • Deep understanding of SLAM methodologies

  • Proven track record of shipping production-quality products using state-of-the-art computer vision, machine learning and robotics technologies

  • Proficiency in C is a must

  • Deep understanding of state estimation techniques: state observers, Bayesian filters, nonlinear state estimation

  • Experience developing algorithms which fuse many sensor modalities is a plus

  • Exceptional organizational, presentation, and communication skills

  • Strong proficiency in modern software development workflows and practices, including version control, build and test systems, and peer review
