DESCRIPTION

The Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine was established in 1969 and since then has grown to have 40+ faculty members. Our research space is located in several buildings on and off campus including the Clinical Teaching Facility, the Antiviral Research Center in Hillcrest, the Stein Clinical Research Building, the Moores Cancer Center, the Biomedical Research Facility, the San Diego VA Medical Center, the Cellular and Molecular Medicine East Building, and the George Palade Laboratories for Cellular and Molecular Medicine. Major international collaborations in Mozambique, Mexico, India, South Africa and Peru play important roles in the Division’s expansion of its international programs.

The division continues to grow and expand with the development of our international medicine program, as well the ongoing studies and interests of our faculty. Under the direct supervision of Professor Jing An of the Division of Infectious Diseases, the incumbent will carry out biochemical and pharmacological studies of proteins and small molecules involved in human diseases.

The incumbent will work on two ongoing grant awards from NIH and CIRM, respectively, both of which need an experienced researcher to conduct the studies. The incumbent must possess the needed skills and experience and be well qualified for the position. The incumbent's position will be 100% supported by the two grants said above. Specifically, the NIH grant involves studies of neural injury and neurodegeneration. The CIRM grant involves the development of a small molecule for the combinational therapy with transplanted neural stem cells of ALS. The incumbent will work on both grants with salary split by the two grants.

Incumbent regularly communicates with laboratory study team members to promptly identify challenges and to ensure that research methods, laboratory procedures, data processing methods and statistical analyses remain aligned with study objectives. On multiple studies, assists in the establishment, review and troubleshooting of wet laboratory procedures. Contributes to the preparation and editing of grant proposals for federal, state and private funding agencies. Will draft, edit or criticize proposal aims and research plans.Contributes to the preparation and editing of manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced theoretical knowledge of proteins involved in infectious diseases and neurodegeneration, specifically, understanding of chemokine receptors and ligands and synthetic agents targeted to these receptors.

  • Experience in conducting original biomedical research.

  • Demonstrated familiarity with computational and medicinal chemistry techniques.

  • Proven familiarity with biochemical and pharmacological characterization of synthetic agents.

  • Demonstrated ability to obtain research data and results pertinent to the projects.

  • Strong organizational ability in working with collaborators and team members within and outside the institution.

  • Excellent communication skills. Ability to facilitate in written and verbal communication with other researchers, and administrative personnel.

  • Experience with preparation of abstracts and manuscripts, and grant applications to federal, state and private funding agencies.

  • Proven ability to utilize a computer for tasks such as word processing and presenting results. Specific knowledge of Word, Excel, Power Point, and chemdraw.

  • Demonstrated data processing experience including data entry procedures.

  • Familiarity with chemokine receptor research methods and ability to critically read published studies related to translational and basic research.

  • Strong ability to communicate effectively to the Principal Investigator, collaborators, and team members.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctoral degree and postdoctoral experience in a related field.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $62,324 - $100,220 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $29.85 - $48.00

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
