Overview: Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D School of Medicine is searching for a Student Life & Well-Being Specialist. Student Life & Well-Being Specialist will provide support to the Director of Student Life and Well-Being in the areas of undergraduate medical education student life and wellness initiatives.
Responsibilities:
- Manages and coordinates large event planning including Second Look Day, Welcome Week, White Coat Ceremony, Wellness Week, Match Day, Awards Ceremonies, and Graduation.
- Works hand-in-hand with the Director of Student Life and Well-Being to support Student Organizations, and Student Interest Groups.
- Works hand-in-hand with the Director of Admissions to plan and execute medical student interview days.
- Works hand-in-hand with the Associate Dean for Wellness and Culture to plan and execute wellness events and initiatives for students.
- Counsels and provides support to students experiencing all levels of academic and non-academic concerns, problems, and questions. Identify and triage concerns, refer to the appropriate available resources, initiate contact and engage relevant referral sources, offer encouragement and support to students, and ensure that assistance has been made available.
- Assists the Associate Dean of Students with special projects.
- Builds and maintains positive relationships with students to support, encourage, and challenge students.
- Assesses program effectiveness, student satisfaction, and student learning outcomes for student life activities and events.
- Promotes student leadership development initiatives.
- Provides support for events organized by students.
- Serves as a member of the WMed social media team.
- Serves as a member of the WMed wellness team.
- Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
- Availability to work occasional overtime on weekends or evenings to complete time sensitive projects or assist with events.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- 2-4 years’ experience in student affairs, college student counseling, higher education, higher education administration, or event planning required.
- Prior experience with graduate level student population is preferred.
- Prior experience with event planning is preferred.

- Knowledge and proficiency in word processing and file management using Word, Powerpoint, Excel, multi-media tools, electronic communications, and web searching as well as and other software as required by the department.
- Ability and proficiency in Outlook and electronic calendar.
- Ability to operate automated standard office equipment such as multi-line phone system, copier, fax, etc.
- Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of work flow.
- Able to perform duties independently, with a minimal need for direct supervision.

WMed Health is the clinical practice of the medical school with more than 300 providers offering comprehensive primary care and specialty services in several locations throughout Kalamazoo, Portage, and Battle Creek. The Department of Pathology faculty serve as the Office of the Medical Examiner for counties throughout Michigan and northern Indiana.
The W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus located in downtown Kalamazoo serves as the primary educational facility with faculty and administrative offices, student study and social spaces, team-based learning halls, a state-of-the-art Simulation Center accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, basic science research labs, as well as toxicology and forensic pathology labs.
WMed is building upon Kalamazoo’s century-long foundation of drug discovery and medical device development with a strategic investment in clinical, laboratory, community, and educational research.
