Job description
The Center for Public Service and Community Research is looking for interns to work with the Adopt a Grandparent program, a grant initiative won by the Collaboratory for Aging Resources and Education (CARE).
Adopt a Grandparent (AAG) is a phone-based program that pairs college students with older adults who were active pre-pandemic for mutual support.
Loneliness and social isolation impact older adults’ physical and mental health. Those without significant social connections face a greater risk of physical and cognitive decline and are less likely to be able to care for themselves.
While loneliness is Adopt a Grandparent’s major focus, it is not the only one. Intergenerational tension is on the rise. A local study found college students eschewed working with older adults because of negative stereotypes about older adults, fear of death and dying, and a lack of positive exposure to older adults when making career path decisions. Adopt Grandparent addresses both groups’ issues simultaneously by creating mutually meaningful connections and positive interactions.
DUTIES
- Collect and analyze data
- Engage with seniors and UHD students over the phone via surveys
- Pull demographic data from UHD students and link them to resources for caregivers
- Research census trends with regards to older adults
- Complete administrative duties as needed

Recommended to have completed successfully SOCW 3331-Practice with Older Adults or otherwise shown interest in working with aging issues and older adults
