Stock Associate duties and responsibilities
The main responsibility of a Stock Associate is to ensure that inventory gets out on the sales floor in good condition as quickly as possible. To do so, they usually perform the following Stock Associate job duties:
- Removing merchandise from boxes and pallets
- Inspecting new merchandise for damage and imperfections
- Removing existing damaged and expired merchandise from shelves
- Printing price tags or labels and applying them to merchandise
- Scanning items to enter them into the inventory system
- Placing inventory in storage areas within storeroom or warehouse
- Filling shelves, racks and other display fixtures with new products
- Returning products left at checkout areas and in other places in the store to their appropriate locations
- Disposing of empty boxes, packaging and pallets

- Ability to move 25 to 75 pounds, depending on the particular merchandise you carry
- Computer skills to operate inventory control software
- Dexterity and strength to operate the triggers on scanners and cutting tools used to open packaging
- Adequate stamina to move about throughout most of a shift
- Listening skills to understand and follow instructions from Supervisors and Managers
- Knowledge of health and safety policies to help avoid injuries
- Memorization skills to learn the store layout and remember where various items go
- Observation skills to notice flaws, read expiration dates and spot other signs of aged or damaged merchandise
