Minimum Qualifications:

Education

  • High School Diploma or possession of a High School Equivalency Certificate (GED)

Twelve (12) months following the achievement of a particular grade level (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), an incumbent may be advanced to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed any required written or practical tests, acquired any required certifications and has met acceptable fitness for duty, work record and job performance requirements.

Experience

  • Level D
    • A minimum of two (2) years of satisfactorily performing the duties of a professional Surface Finisher

Certification/Licensure

  • Valid motor vehicle operator's license issued from jurisdiction of residence

Mission Essential Designation:

In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.

Job Summary:

The Surface Finisher performs bronze metal restoration/refinishing and various types of surface painting work. The incumbent is responsible for restoring, refinishing, and painting surfaces such as wood, metal, glass, synthetics, concrete, and any surfaces requiring finishing by brush, roller, and spray guns, using paint, varnish, lacquer, shellac, epoxy resin, Teflon, and chemicals; includes the repair of drywall, stucco, and plaster.

Job Levels: At each successive grade level of this job (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description

“AA Lead” Level: In addition to independently performing the most complex aspects of the duties and essential functions described, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring work responsibilities of a group or team are properly completed in a timely manner and acts in the absence of the supervisor as required.

Essential Functions

  • Lays out work assignments, determines methods, techniques, and materials needed to effectively accomplish assignments. Performs preparation of bronze finishes for refinishing through the removal of existing finishes, scratches, stains or discolorations.
  • Applies refinishing chemicals at the prescribed ratio and methods established by manufacturing or industry standards in accordance with Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) architectural finish standards. Tints, tones, matches, and blends coating materials, adds various agents and combines mixtures to achieve desired colors, texture, consistency, and drying of area. Ensures that the match, decorative appearance, and level of the thickness meets finish requirements.
  • Prepares wood, metal, drywall, and other surfaces by scraping, sanding, applying chemicals, and washing surfaces to remove cracked, flaking or accumulated paint, rust or surface residues. Shapes and levels various surfaces with metal, synthetic resins, plastics, and patching compounds to ensure that the proper texture and smoothness of the surface is attained.
  • Paints interior and exterior surfaces of bus and rail facilities, administrative offices, equipment and rooms. Performs painting duties in accordance with established standards and other guidelines, utilizing brushes, rollers, power spraying equipment and machinery as required. Performs layout as designed and paints stripes and other pavement markings on parking lots and roadways throughout the Authority.
  • Sets up and works from scaffolding, ladders, and other high reach or specialized equipment as required in assigned work. Maintains and makes minor adjustments on spray equipment, as required.
  • Completes the required forms, tags, and other documentation that describe maintenance work. Enters data into the Authority’s maintenance database and prepares parts requisitions for the supervisor's approval, to ensure equipment, systems and associated mechanical devices are maintained according to Authority and manufacturer standards.
  • Supports emergency response efforts by providing immediate maintenance to protect assets.

Other Functions

  • Attends and passes the required safety training classes and continuously learns industry best practices for working safely and efficiently. Performs assignments according to established safety practices and maintenance guidelines.
  • Responds to, and provides assistance during, severe weather emergencies, to ensure safety requirements are met by properly maintaining Authority equipment and environment.
