The Lansing Board of Water & Light has two openings for a Systems Administrators with our Operations Technology Department located in Lansing, MI.

Position Summary:

Job Type: Full-Time
Starting Salary Range: $85,200 - $103,900

Responsible for the planning, design, installation, configuration, operation and support of system software, hardware, and related infrastructure. Serves as a technical expert in the area of system administration for complex operating systems.

Essential Functions:
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of computer systems by monitoring performance, configuration and maintenance.
  • Ensures that records of system downtime and equipment inventory are properly maintained.
  • Applies revisions to host system firmware and software.
  • Works with vendors to assist support activities.
  • Develops new system and application implementation plans, custom scripts and testing procedures to ensure operational reliability.
  • Trains technical staff in how to use new software and hardware developed and/or acquired.
  • May guide or provide work direction to technical staff, contract staff and/or student employees.
  • Establishes, maintains and manages users accounts. Installs, modifies and maintains systems and utility software on computer systems.
  • Provides server support related to other software. Establishes guidelines and methods for the installation and management of the host computer operating systems.
  • Ensures high availability and acceptable levels of performance of mission critical host computer resources.
  • Develops procedures to maintain security and protect systems from unauthorized use, acts of nature and user abuse.
  • Acts as a SME for NERC CIP requirements. Responsible for meeting CIP requirements.
  • Develops procedures, programs and documentation for backup and restoration of host operating systems and host-based applications.
  • Develops and coordinates project directions and schedules to maximize benefits and minimize impacts on the customer organizations.
  • Provides leadership in planning and implementation of projects for computer operations and enterprise systems administration.
  • Develops tools, procedures, and training sessions for Operations staff to assist with work.
  • Manages the data center and computer host systems including hardware, software and equipment.
  • Provides support for complex multi-server high availability Linux and Windows based systems.
  • Stays current with technological developments in systems administration technology and recommends ways to take advantage of new technology.
  • Follow corporate change control and work management practices and policies.
  • Leads root cause analysis activities to improve system performance.
  • Keeps track of all system-related documentation using approved methods.
  • Works with members of the OT organization to benefit Operations.
  • Participation in the continuous improvement of the Asset Management System and Work Management processes.
  • Predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job Specifications:

Required:
  • This position requires knowledge which is normally required through the completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • This position requires a minimum of five to seven of previous experience in a position directly responsible for system administration of data, audio or video networks.
  • Experience in complex systems design, programming and systems software support.
  • Elevated competency in multiple system environment, fileservers, operating systems and applications.
  • Advanced knowledge of client server environments, networks, various programing languages and operating systems of common equipment and technologies in use; Unix system administration, enterprise backup and recovery procedures, and system performance monitoring tools.
  • Applies an intensive diversified knowledge of system administration principles and practices in broad areas of assignment and related fields. Knowledge of Oracle RDBMS with Linux administration and Oracle RAC.
  • Ability to document complex system design activities and configure systems to be consistent with institutional policies/procedures; communicate technical/complex information both verbally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperation, understanding, trust and credibility; perform multiple tasks concurrently and respond to emergency situations effectively.
  • The ideal candidate will have excellent skills in the following areas: business case development, leading change, leading people, building communication; results driven, internal controls/integrity, personal computer skills, and any other required BWL computer application, business acumen and safety consciousness.
  • Must have excellent verbal / written communication skills.
  • Must demonstrate basic level proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Must have demonstrated management and project management skills.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable record.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with customers, outside agencies and vendors.
  • Ability to be on call when required.
  • Ability to enter and retrieve data from computerized, typed and written sources.

Preferred:
  • Knowledge of NERC CIP standards.
  • System administration experience in multiple environments and database servers, fileservers, and networking hardware.

Must be able to remain in a stationary position for the majority of the working day. The person in this position needs to move about inside the office environment. Constantly operates a computer and other office equipment. Ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen. Must communicate frequently with other departments and employees both verbally and in writing. May need to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and/or position the body to reach items on the floor/ below the knee level, or reach above head. On occasion, may need to use stairs.

Constantly works in a temperature-controlled office environment.

Must successfully complete a background check, a substance screening and a physical (if applicable).
