Job description

Work to be performed:

  • Constructs/alters, repairs, and/or maintains costumes using the appropriate equipment (sewing machine, serger, buttonholer, blind hemmer, and button-covering machine) and handwork (buttonholes, backstitching, darning, etc.) according to accepted and approved CDC standards. Including preparing fabrics and linings for construction as necessary.
  • Assists Cutter-Draper/Patternmaker and/or First Hands with costume fittings and cutting as necessary.
  • Provides counter service to customers receiving soiled costumes (incoming orders) and returning cleaned costumes (out-going orders) using the barcode computer system; sorts and bags costumes for cleaning method including returned loan costumes; appropriately tags garments noting stains and tears.
  • Sort garments returning from the cleaning vendors and compiles orders.
  • Accurately directs out-going orders to the appropriate location: mending, customer pick-up, storage, return-to-stock, research and design, accessories, and issuance.
  • Employs excellent customer service skills as the liaison with the customer regarding any concerns about the physical condition of their costumes initiating the necessary problem solving.

Communications:

  • Provides information and advice to costumed employee on the care and maintenance of costumes, as necessary.
  • Assists in the search and communication of information from the International Fabricare Institute and other consulting organizations.
  • Keeps the Operations supervisor and team informed of any laundry counter procedure changes or problems.
  • Checks out-going orders for proper cleaning and pressing and the accuracy of the order.
  • Serves as CDC's liaison to the cleaning vendors.
  • Keeps accurate records of work as instructed.
  • Participates in departmental tours and outreach programs as assigned.
  • Works as a team member with the operations unit as well as CDC employees demonstrating CWF’s hospitality and courtesy policy, participating in team meetings, problem solving, brainstorming, etc. and effectively communicating project progress, appointments, schedules, etc., to the supervisor/manager.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrated proficient sewing skills, both machine and hand.
  • Familiar with patterns and their use.
  • Ability to work independently following verbal and/or written instructions; ability to work cooperatively as a team member.
  • Good communication skills-oral, written, and listening.
  • Must have basic computer skills - generally gained through completion of a high school education/G.E.D. plus
  • Must have excellent customer service skills and organizational skills; must be able to identify costume fiber content; one year proficient and professional experience in customer service or comparable function. Occasionally, must be able to transport up to 50 pounds of costumes.

Preferred:

  • Three years stitching experience
  • 2 years experience in period costuming
  • Trade school or college courses in tailoring; college courses in history of costume
  • Experience on a variety of machines and equipment
  • Ability to assess compatibility of fabrics, threads, linings, and designs.
