Teaching Assistant Autism 1:1 Communication Regulation Partner
Job description
Hi! We have an amazing opportunity for a special person to build something from the ground up at our new private school – Acton Academy Eastern Long Island (www.actoneli.org). We are introducing an entirely new educational paradigm – a 21st century education – that will change how children learn. Based on our affiliation with the original Acton Academy in Austin, TX, we are one of hundreds of new Acton’s opening up around the globe.
Acton is a totally unique environment where children work independently on core skills, but collaborate with their peers doing hands-on, project-based work across all other disciplines like science, social studies, STEM, art, writing and more. And we are doing something entirely new at Acton in Riverhead. We started the autism studio in 2021 to support autistic children in a way that enables them to reach their full potential and exercise their brilliance.
We do this by teaching non-verbal and minimally verbal autistic children to communicate with a letter board. This leads us to discover the vast intelligence they possess, that was until recently, silenced by an inability to communicate. When you see the real intelligence in this population first hand, it will knock your socks off, and you will understand why we are passionate about this program.
We are looking for a communication regulation partner to support an 18-year-old brilliant young woman with autism. She is highly intelligent with a poetry blog, and she has a lot to say! We are looking for someone to support her throughout the day. She is very aware of her OCD behavioral challenges and is entirely on board with working through them. We believe in her potential with the right guidance and support. All the people we hire MUST believe in our autistic population's abilities and intelligence.
As we grow, with your help, this program has the potential to profoundly change many lives – yours, the children, and what the world at large believes about these special kids. This is the beginning of a community integration project that will enable children with autism to reach their full potential and share their special gifts with the world.
Credentials are not as important to us as the person that you are. Are you open-minded, energetic, curious, and passionate about what we are doing? If so let’s talk!
