Liberty Mutual has an immediate opening for a an experienced Claims Professional for a Technical Claims Specialist I, Technical Claims Specialist II or Senior Technical Claims Specialist I. In this role, you will investigate, evaluate and resolve Specialty and Environmental General Liability cases. Assignment may include a predetermined section of open inventory or cases that present high exposure. The Claims Specialist will resolve coverage and liability issues by applying established procedures and practices, and will provide customer service to current and former policyholders, vendors, and third-party claimants.
This is a range posting, and will be determined based on candidate experience. The salary range posted reflects the range for the varying pay scale that encompasses each of the Liberty Mutual regions, and the overall cost of living for that range.
This is a 100% remote position, and candidates from any location may apply. Please note that travel may be required if/when necessary, usually consistent with 1-2 times a year.
Responsibilities:
  • This position is in the Global Risk Solutions (GRS) Strategic and Professional Risk Claims and Environmental (SPRC/E3U ) Unit within the AGL Specialty Claims group. Claims handled could include Toxic Tort, Environmental, Coverage, Class Actions, Sexual Misconduct, Errors & Omissions, Professional Liability, Employment Practices Liability, and other unique complex claims.
  • Manages processes and resolves claims assigned by the Unit Director/Team Manager.
  • Communicates with policyholders/customers, witnesses, claimants, remediation experts, counsel and others to gather claim facts.
  • Communication is generally via phone and email but may include in person contact and travel.
  • Maintains adequacy of reserve levels for both loss and expense.
  • Analyzes coverage and issues Coverage Position Letters to customers, in concert with legal staff.
  • Tracks litigation expenses on assigned cases and makes recommendations to improve litigation expense management.
  • Negotiates settlements with attorneys, claimants, and/or co-defendants, and cost share agreements with other carriers.
  • Prepares for and attends trials, hearings, mediations and settlement conferences.
  • Keeps management informed of developments and confers with in-house and outside counsel and management on jurisdictional issues.
  • Updates files and provides comprehensive reports as required, in accordance with established departmental procedures
  • Establishes appropriate working team (Home Office Legal, Defense Counsel, and other appropriate internal/external resources) based on allegations established in suit.
  • Trains and mentors staff as appropriate; manages relationships and acts as liaison with various business partners (e.g., Underwriting, Reinsurance, Etc.).
  • Keeps abreast of existing and proposed legislation, court decisions and trends and experience pertaining to specialty coverage issues. May analyze the impact upon claims policies and procedures and advises Claims Management so appropriate action can be taken where required.
  • Participates in special projects.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's Degree or equivalent business experience is required, and 4-5 years of related claims experience.
  • Solid understanding of Complex Unit Auto and General Liability claims handling techniques and a working knowledge of LMG Claims procedures and demonstrated the ability to communicate effectively. Current Global Risk Solutions Casualty and/or Specialty experience within National Insurance is preferred.
  • Licensing required.
  • Knowledge of Commercial Casualty claims investigation, coverage evaluation, reserving and expense management, resolution strategy, negotiation, litigation management, claims evaluation as well as the insurance legal and regulatory environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Intermediate to advanced level of skill in the areas of customer focus, problem solving, communication's, gaining support, team work, adaptability, and demonstrated ability to work independently, achieve results and execute thoroughly.
