UES, Inc. has an opening for a Technical Director to lead our Materials & Processes division working at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH. This individual will direct the UES Materials & Processes division and will play key technical and leadership roles encompassing research in materials discovery, processing, and characterization of advanced structural materials for propulsion and hypersonic applications including composites (PMC and CMC), polymers, ceramics and UHTCs. The role will provide hands-on technical contributions, lead strategic direction, provide mentoring to researchers, and oversee the programmatic aspects of the division. Functional areas for this role will include:

Technical Expertise: The initial primary function will be performing and mentoring modeling activities tightly interwoven with experimental work in materials and process development. Areas of technical focus include: CMCs for turbine engine and hypersonic applications, high temperature polymers and PMC for propulsion and space applications, optical ceramics, UHTC and UHTCMC for hypersonic applications. Experience with use of ML tools to accelerate materials discovery and optimize process to reduce defects and cost will desirable. Familiarity with advanced materials characterization techniques and modalities (Optical, TEM, SEM, EDS, X-ray etc.) applied to functional and structural materials.

Customer Relationships: Identify needs and implement solutions to address customer requirements. Set research and scientific priorities which align with our overall mission, goals, and growth objectives. Assist in developing strategies to ensure that UES maintains a competitive advantage in our core areas while identifying and driving expansion opportunities.

Collaboration and Mentoring: Maintain a broad network of SME contacts and establish partnership with academia, industry, and other national labs. Effectively collaborate with junior investigators, colleagues, and students. Mentor staff and assist them in meeting their technical objectives. Understanding of how to recruit and retain scientific talent is essential.

Business Leadership: Provide active management in technical, operational, and business areas of the division while developing program managers towards continuous improvement. Identify commercialization and transition opportunities for technologies.


Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or other relevant areas, with 15 + years of experience is required.
  • Expertise in materials modeling is preferred. Experience conducting process modeling, materials modeling and lifing (life prediction) of CMCs, PMCs, or ceramics is preferred.
  • Track record of Independently building research programs in the areas of materials.
  • Experience at Senior Scientist level in an applicable field of materials with demonstrated mentoring experience and ability to contribute hands-on research
  • Experience with scaling up and commercialization of technologies
  • Track record of writing successful proposals for Federal funding, and experience in Federal programs.
  • Experience with managing multiple programs to meet schedule, cost and technical milestones.
  • Experience fostering teams and partnerships with a broad range of collaborators.
  • Experience developing partnerships across business units and corporate functions
  • This position is working within a government facility and requires U.S. Citizenship
