It’s an exciting time in pet food! Post Holdings, Inc. recently announced an agreement to buy several pet food brands from The J.M. Smucker Co. The transaction is anticipated to close early in the second calendar quarter of 2023. Upon closing of the acquisition, Post expects to create a new pet food platform within Post Consumer Brands. This role is part of the team of 1,000 employees who will soon join the Post family to focus on and grow these iconic pet brands.

The Lawrence, Kansas facility is 236,000 square feet and home to about 155 hard working team members who are proud to produce iconic pet food brands like Kibbles 'n Bits®. Lawrence is a college town and the home to both the University of Kansas and Haskell Indian Nations University with Kansas State University about 85 miles away. The city is known for a thriving music and art scene and is also the home of the University of Kansas athletic teams.
Responsibilities:
This position will serve to be the key technical and maintenance leader in the manufacturing of dry pet food. The successful candidate will work alongside the operations leadership team to drive continuous improvement and the proper maintenance of plant equipment. The role will serve as the plant’s Progressive Maintenance Pillar Owner and will be responsible for driving the key result metrics of the pillar. Additionally, the role will serve to deliver the business in the areas of Safety, Quality, Reliability, Efficiency, Cost, Delivery, and Sustainability. The Technical (Maintenance) Manager is responsible for the direct leadership, development, and support of our Maintenance Coordinators.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs maintenance management by leading maintenance personnel and establishing priorities in maintenance schedules.
- Lead the operating departments’ Maintenance Technicians and Coordinators to:
- Develop their technical acumen
- Understand and apply Progressive Maintenance tools
- Prioritize work effectively through use of a CMMS
- Respond to process failures and breakdowns with a sense of urgency
- Train all levels of the organization to complete mechanical work
- Drive high-performance work culture by engaging with team members on the floor and coaching to problem solve, make decisions, and become self-reliant
- Coach operating teams and leadership to root cause identification, elimination of losses, and the use of problem-solving tools to identify gaps and prioritize work.
- Responsible for electronic reliability data and improving methods for collecting accurate data
- Establish and track KPIs as required to successfully manage the safety, quality, and efficiency of the maintenance operations.
- Working closely with the Plant Engineer, lead and execute on the 5-year CAPEX plan for the operating departments
- Participate in and/or lead improvement teams to provide targeted improvements to meet plant and company objectives.
- Address gaps in line/area performance through the implementation and effective coaching of Smucker Continuous Improvement methodologies; foster a zero-loss culture
- Owns a safety sub-key element and/or a quality key element
EDUCATION
Bachelor’s Degree (Engineering preferred) or equivalent maintenance/technical experience
EXPERIENCE
Minimum of 5 years in manufacturing operations is preferred. Food or pharmaceutical experience is a plus.
Experience with maintenance work development, planning, and scheduling is desired.
Experience leading and working in collaboration with others is desired.
Candidates should have demonstrated experience developing and maintaining a budget
Experience with a CMMS is required (Oracle’s eAM is preferred)
SKILLS & ABILITIES
Effective presentation, verbal, and written communication skills
Experience coaching & growing capability in mechanical (maintenance) technicians. Identification of capability gaps, plans to close gaps in self and others to assure team skills meet immediate and future business / team needs.
Ability to gather and validate data independently, analyze data to determine optimal solutions. Share analysis and solutions with others.
Strong demonstrated technical and mechanical ability as candidate will perform maintenance on equipment and teach others to do the same.
Project management experience would be valued for this role, as the individual will manage costs, schedules and resources for the work.
Operates with discipline – set objectives, target timing and task priorities; follows through to meet commitments.
Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally as required
