Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B) manages the 10-year, $1.6 billion Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract for the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Environmental Management, Los Alamos Field Office.

N3B is a limited liability company owned by HII Nuclear Inc. and BWX Technologies, joined by our critical subcontractors Longenecker and Associates and Tech2 Solutions.

N3B brings operational discipline, proven approaches and predictable results to the Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract.

Position Location:
This position is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Position Summary
The Technical Writer filling this position executes a wide range of writing-related assignments for the CH-TRU organization. This includes compiling information and writing reports contractually required by DOE, supporting Readiness activities and editing assessment reports, supporting the development of procedures and associated training material, and a variety of other writing assignments that support facility and waste operations.

This position requires creativity and flexibility to meet new challenges, and independence in supporting multiple projects and organizations simultaneously.

This position reports to the CH-TRU Operations Support Manager.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):
  • Writes weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports detailing CH-TRU’s accomplishments, challenges, and statistical progress toward waste management and shipping goals.
  • Assists Readiness Group in preparing documents and compiling material needed to begin a Readiness Assessment, and supports Readiness Team in writing final assessment report.
  • Assists Procedures Group in performing content verifications and editing procedures used for nuclear facility management and the storage, processing, and shipment of radioactive waste.
  • Assists Training Group in editing training material, such as briefing slides and lesson plans, for consistency and clarity.
  • Writes and edits other non-technical documents supporting Facility and Waste Operations, such as internal memos, safety and accomplishment posters, and web content for CH-TRU’s intranet.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):
  • Comprehensive knowledge of principles and techniques associated with technical writing, Word processing, and document production.
  • Familiarity with nuclear facility operations, including Readiness cycles, DOE reporting requirements, conduct of operations, conduct of training, and implementation of technical safety requirements (TSRs).
  • Ability to perform highly complex writing tasks that involve compiling information from multiple and varied sources.
  • Capable of acting as an independent contributor who is competent within the broad technical writing discipline.
  • Capable of managing multiple document assignments simultaneously.

Education and Experience Required:
Bachelors’ degree combined with 10 years’ relative experience. However, a combination of education and relevant experience wherein the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the position’s duties and responsibilities have been adequately demonstrated is acceptable.

Education Equivalency: 2 years of relevant experience for 1 year of college.

Experience in nuclear facility operations and waste management is desired.

Effects of decisions are long-lasting and heavily influence the future course of the organization. Errors in judgement or failure to achieve results would result in the expenditure of large amounts of company resources.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
Normally assigned to perform work in an office environment with occasional excursions to perform field research and validation activities. Job performance requires adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements of the discipline.

This role will maintain required safety, security and operational training; assure procedural and regulatory compliance; and make safety, security and quality an integral part of every task; including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.
