Job Title:
Technician-Construction Services

General Statement of Duties: The Technician performs construction engineering technician services related to earthwork, concrete, asphalt and utility construction for DOT, municipalities, and private sector clients. They are responsible for inspecting and reporting on specific aspects of construction works in progress, such as concrete pours, rebar placement, pipe replacements as examples. The Technician may be responsible for inspection and sampling of construction materials as well.

Supervision Received and Exercised: The Technician works independently on broad projects under the direction of an Engineer, Project Engineer or Department Manager. The Technician has not direct supervisory duties required.

Examples of Duties:

  • Perform construction engineering services related to earthwork, concrete, asphalt and utility construction for DOT, municipalities, and private sector clients.
  • Responsible for inspecting and reporting on specific aspects of construction works in progress, such as concrete pours, rebar placement, pipe replacements as examples. May be responsible for inspection and sampling of construction materials.
  • Performs computations with formulas, plots data and draws simple curves and graphs.
  • Assists engineers in field during soil and materials investigations.
  • Ensures that job site tests/observations, including quality control, quality assurance, and verifications are performed in accordance with the standard test/observation methods, project specifications and other contract documents.
  • May perform lab testing and observation of soils, concrete and asphalt.
  • Performs inspections for construction projects to ensure contractor compliance with state specifications, plans, and/or proposals for roadway work, roadway, or pavement.
  • Verifies plan quantities and calculations as bid plans.
  • Prepares and maintains project records and reports.
  • May notify the Contractor or the Project Engineer of non-conforming work.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of engineering, construction, testing and inspection principles.
  • Knowledge of materials and lab testing as well as standard testing and observation methods.
  • Knowledge and understanding of construction or engineering services in local areas.
  • Skill in performing quality control initiatives
  • Skill in testing performance and lab reporting.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to perform engineering and construction field testing.
  • Ability to write reports and maintain records.
  • Ability to work in external environment conditions during difficult weather
  • Ability to provide status updates independently when necessary.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Technical school or Community college graduate preferred.
  • Associate degree in related field with at least 2 years’ experience, or a Bachelor’s Degree in related field preferred.
  • 2-3 years of construction inspection and testing experience, must be familiar with highway construction specifications and have previous field experience.


Education/Certifications:

  • Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in related field preferred.
  • ACI Grade I, DOT Asphalt Tech, NICET Level II Soils, ICC Special inspections and/or CWI/NDT inspectors, preferred.
  • Must have a valid driver license and a clean driving record.


Physical Requirements:
Primary work location is in the field and will require candidate to stand for extended periods. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
