This position will be located at NASA’s Langley Research Center.

Responsibilities:
Hourly rate is $20.84. This position is located at the Wallops Island Flight Facility Operations and Maintenance Service, NASA Wallops, Wallops Island, VA.
Responsibilities:
HVAC Trades Technician performs routine maintenance and basic repairs on auxiliary equipment such as heating and air conditioning equipment, fans, electric motors, drives, centrifugal pumps.
  • Experienced in maintaining (including replenishing fluids), modifying, troubleshooting and repairing air conditioning and heating units, associated ventilation systems and building automation controls
  • Knowledgeable of elementary electricity, including relays
  • Equipment includes but is not limited to chillers, package air conditioners, heat pumps, oil and gas boilers and furnaces, geothermal units, condensers, ventilation systems, cooling towers, refrigerators, freezers, drinking fountains, ice machines and ice cream cabinets
  • Checks components and elements such as valves, pressure gauges, temperature readings, switch settings, gas leaks, bearing wear, overheating, noise, irregular operation of fans, coils, oil separators, condensers, and compressors
  • Takes temperature readings, tests for gas leaks, inspects tubing and piping for leaks.
  • Installs refrigerant and piping lines, ductwork per schematic drawings, and connects assemblies in line, such as compressors, condensers, motors, and related units.
  • Performs preventive maintenance (PMs) and repairs
  • Adheres to governing laws, policies, and procedures to – remove and replace refrigerants, compressors, condensing units, pumps, fans, and other mechanical components
Qualifications:
U.S. citizenship required. Valid driver's license required. Completed a recognized HVAC apprentice program or have a minimum of five years of experience as an HVAC Mechanic. Current EPA Universal license. Must be able to effectively communicate to others.
  • Possesses basic understanding of system concepts, such as ventilation system components, and how to use them
  • References manufacturer’s handbooks and related manuals as guides for specifications and for the more complex diagnosis and repair procedures.
Exercise diligence when developing a Safe Plan of Action (SPA) for each task performed. Your SPA is a Jacobs provided tool to be used for the prevention of incidents, accidents, and injuries; as such, it is the most important tool you are required to use.
Essential Functions
Work Environment:
Test environment – May be exposed to areas of high noise levels, hazardous propellants, explosives, chemicals, and industrial facilities. (90%)
Travel between various facilities and during test operations may be required and may bring exposure to loud noise and potentially hazardous equipment operation and environment (10%). All safety rules and regulations must always be followed without exception.
Physical Requirements:
Visual and physical (hands on) contact of mechanical related systems, hardware, articles (50%). Must be able to walk, stand, bend, twist and sit for extended periods as well as climb various heights, crawl in confined spaces, and lift up to 35 lbs. (20%) and with assistance 50 lbs., body mobility (60%) and ability (where applicable) to distinguish colors.
Equipment and Machines:
HVAC Trades Technician’s toolbox, including manifold gauge set, multi-meter, and clamp-on ammeter. (80%)
Standard office equipment – PC, telephone, fax, copier, etc. (10%)
Safety and personal protective equipment (PPE) (80%)
Attendance:
Regular attendance is mandatory (100%)
Overtime/work outside normal schedule required (20%)
Other Essential Functions:
U.S. Citizenship required. Must be able to work in a team atmosphere. Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation. Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety/risk hazard to the employee or others. Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance as required. Employee must have a valid driver's license.
