Position Overview


The 30+ year company supports the petrochemical and manufacturing industry domestically and internationally and is positioned along the Houston Ship Channel providing training, occupational medicine, and innovative solutions to industry. The Training Instructor is responsible for preparing, conducting, and evaluating safety classes, hands-on training, multi-media presentations, and skill sessions, both on-site and off-site. The Safety Instructor is competent as an instructor and knowledgeable in the topic being instructed. The Instructor may be utilized for any safety program or certification evaluation for which he/she is qualified.


Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Create instructor materials (course outlines, background material, instructional materials, and training aides).
  • Deliver classroom or skills training sessions so that the learning objectives are achieved, ensure students are actively and positively engaged in the learning process, and instructional/audiovisual equipment and tools are used effectively.
  • Conduct periodic surveys of equipment, training areas and classrooms so that all safety and hygiene hazards to trainees and instructors are identified and corrected.
  • Complete all the administrative steps applicable to the class so that all required information is verified and properly recorded.
  • Apply all HASC policies and procedures so that the policies are achieved and procedures followed by trainees and instructors.
  • Administer tests and evaluation instruments so that the trainees follow all instructions and the evaluation is administered as intended.
  • Maintain and develop customer relationships by responding to questions, concerns and requests from trainees with speed and professionalism.
  • Refill SCBAs and Egress Bottles, and other equipment as needed.
  • At the end of each class, inspect and re-arrange classroom materials and equipment so that they are safe and ready for next session.
  • Keep up to date with relevant safety topics, software and lecture and online training technology
  • Manage the training program in accordance with business needs, regulatory requirements, and quality management systems.

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

  • Customer service skills are necessary. Strong communication skills - written and oral.
  • Must enjoy working with the public and have a strong initiative to work independently.
  • Must be able to adapt to work in varied environments and learn detailed procedures.
  • Proven ability to work under pressure and make effective decisions.
  • Cross-train and assist other departments as necessary.
  • Safety, health and environmental work experience in the petrochemical, industrial, and/or construction industry
  • College degree in safety, health or related field

Requirements

  • Proven instructor and general organizational skills.
  • Minimum 1 year previous instructional/training experience
  • Minimum 2 years petrochemical, industrial and/or construction work related experience
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Each course or topic may require specific minimum qualifications, as determined by HASC and applicable regulations.
  • Proficiency in Windows Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Physical Demands


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to read, talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle training equipment and tools, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Reporting Responsibilities


The Training Instructor reports directly to the Supervisor of Training.
