TITLE: TRANSPORTATION SUPPORT SPECIALIST


PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The primary responsibility of the Transportation Support Specialist is to provide assistance in the planning and supervising of the Transportation operations for the school district. Work includes, but is not limited to, assisting bus drivers and /or district/school administration with daily bus operations.


QUALIFICATIONS:


Licensing/Certification:

  • Valid driver’s license in the state of North Carolina (CDL required).
  • Ability to maintain a school bus endorsement and pocket card Education:
  • Associates degree preferred, High School Diploma required Experience:
  • Two years of successful experience in school transportation
  • Or a combined record of the required experience and subject knowledge


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist with ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local laws/regulations regarding school transportation
  • Serves as liaison between all area drivers/monitors and all departments, including internal and external, as needed.
  • Assist schools with bus driver attendance, coordinate substitute drivers, and establish double routes as needed to provide coverage for school buses.
  • Assist in the management of and effective use of technology, on school buses, such as GPS systems, and surveillance cameras, on school buses
  • Assist in the preparation of all necessary reports relating to school transportation.
  • Assist with recruitment, training, and supervision of all regular yellow bus drivers and activity bus drivers. Monitors PCS training assignments for assigned area employees to ensure compliance.
  • Assist with communications to schools, drivers, and transportation staff in a professional timely manner
  • Provides input and suggestions to assist in updating the bus driver manual on an annual basis.
  • Reinforce the Student Code of Conduct
  • Promote a bully-free environment
  • Provide technical and administrative support for transportation planning
  • Assist with the bus drivers and monitors in the maintenance of TD-29 data (Route description) provide accurate road and student data information, and communicate bus stops and routes issues.
  • Willing to drive a school bus when needed

  • Compliance issues related to the North Carolina school bus transportation program
  • North Carolina School Law as it pertains to pupil transportation
  • Safe, proper, and courteous operation of automobiles and school buses
  • Relevant Board of Education, NCDPI, and State policies
  • Regulations pertaining to the transportation department and staff member
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with staff, students, parents, bus drivers, and transportation personnel
  • Develops and maintains professional alliances with school administrators to ensure effective control over groups of students and ensure student behavior is not distractive to safe driving 11/2022
  • Attend or present training sessions as needed and determined by the supervisor
  • Demonstrate a team concept model for other employees in the organization
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuous quality improvement
  • Perform other duties and accept responsibilities as assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


Strength and energy sufficient to maintain an active work schedule involving driving and/or physical exertion; hearing and speaking to exchange information; seeing to perform assigned duties; standing, stooping, or sitting for extended periods; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment; kneeling, bending at the waist, and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally as needed; lifting light and heavy objects, and ability to distinguish between colors.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:


The Transportation Support Specialist works in a clean building with several other mechanics and at times, works outdoors. The noise level is moderate to heavy. This position may require driving a scheduled school bus route as needed.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:


11 Month SALARY GRADE: 65 Office Support
