Summary The Utilities Technician - Refrigeration and Boiler Tech maintains the day-to-day operation of ammonia refrigeration systems to ensure areas within the plant are kept at the standard temperature ranges, HVAC for buildings, and to provide refrigeration for industrial processes. Operates automatically fired boilers to generate steam that supplies heat or power for buildings or industrial processes, by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Refrigeration: Under the supervision of the Utilities Lead/ Supervisor

  • Makes daily inspection of equipment and system to observe operating condition and need for repair or adjustment.
  • Observes temperature, pressure and ampere readings for system and equipment and adjusts controls. NEVER overrides automatic controls without the direct supervision of a qualified operator.
  • Records temperature, pressure, and other readings on logsheet at specified intervals.
  • Makes periodic inspection of equipment and system to observe operating condition and need for repair or adjustment.
  • Adjusts controls to isolate and clear broken lines for repair or shuts down equipment.
  • Repacks pumps and compressors, cleans condensers, and replaces worn or defective parts.

Boiler:

  • Observes pressure, temperature, and draft meters on panel to verify specified operation.
  • Turns valves and adjusts controls to set specified fuel feed, draft openings, water level, and steam pressure of boiler.
  • Observes boiler and auxiliary units to detect malfunctions and makes repairs.
  • Collect and test water samples.
  • Water softer-regenerate - drain and add softer to water tank.
  • Maintains log of meter and gauge readings and records data such as water test results and quantity of fuel consumed.
  • Documents all readings and changes as set forth by the Maintenance Manager daily.

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma/ GED and has successfully passed Ammonia and Boiler Operator 1- and 6-months hands on in plant experience, and plant demonstrated ability under the supervision of a company qualified operator. Must be documented and signed off by the Maintenance Manager.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Spreadsheet software and Microsoft Word Processing software.
