JOB TITLE: UX Designer
DEPARTMENT: Innovation Lab
LOCATION: Bay Area preferred, Remote
REPORTS TO: Associate Director, Innovation Lab
JOB CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time; Exempt; Non-Union
PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The Innovation Lab at Human Rights First, created in 2019, houses the world’s first digital technology incubator dedicated solely to the advancement of human rights. Since then, we’ve had tremendous early success: developing a world-class tool for threat detection that was launched into a venture-backed startup, Pyrratech, developing a computer vision-powered tool that detects violence and war crimes in video, and prototyping tools that have been used by dozens of leading organizations around the world including the Anti-defamation League, The New York Times, and the world-renowned UC Berkeley Human Rights Center.
To date our work was made possible in large part due to partnerships with external development shops and contracted design and engineering talent. To build on this early success, we are transitioning to an in-house model – hiring a full-time team that can be more agile, collaborative, and human-centered. That’s where you come in.
The Innovation Lab seeks an experienced, entrepreneurial, mission-driven UX designer interested in becoming a founding team-member of this exciting, new chapter. The UX Designer will join a growing team of world-class engineers, designers, and strategists dedicated to applying their skills to protect democracy and human rights. Together, they will partner closely with human rights defenders and experts to design solutions that meaningfully advance our work on systemic injustice, authoritarianism, extremism, and the use and abuse of technology. As the UX Designer, you will be responsible for researching, defining, designing, prototyping, and shipping impactful new products and features.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collaborate closely with strategists, engineers, and other partners on solutions from concept to completion
  • Build the strategic working context necessary to inform design decisions - distilling project goals, requirements, constraints, user personas and journeys
  • Facilitate brainstorms and product discussions to help generate ideas, prioritize features and build consensus
  • Translate broad, conceptual ideas into concrete wireframes and mockups
  • Design prototypes using the right level of fidelity necessary to solicit reliable user and stakeholder feedback
  • Plan, execute, analyze, and synthesize user research to understand user needs, evaluate usability, and assess the value and impact of various solutions
  • Own the end-to-end design across multiple products and projects from user flows to shippable product interfaces
  • Confidently present and clearly articulate design decisions to a broad set of internal and external stakeholders
  • Support end-user outreach and customer support efforts
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND EXPERIENCE:
  • 3+ years of experience in a UX/UI designer role working on web and mobile products
  • Experience and comfort working with engineers in a technical environment
  • A demonstrated balance of interaction design, visual design, user research, and product thinking skills
  • Proficiency in industry-standard design and prototyping tools, such as Sketch, Adobe XD or Figma
  • A strong portfolio of design work that reflects a breadth of product design experience
  • Strong working knowledge of best practices in user research, UX testing, UX and IA design
  • A basic understanding of semantic HTML and CSS
  • Fluency in human-centered design principles, methods, and processes
  • Experience leveraging research and data to inform product and strategy decisions (but also know how to balance with design intuition)
  • An uncanny ability to simplify the complex, and distill large amounts of user input into actionable insights
  • A high level of empathy – for users, partners, and teammates
  • Deep interest in the intersection of technology and human rights
  • An understanding of accessibility best practices and inclusive design preferred
  • Experience designing data visualizations that simplify the complex preferred
  • Experience developing products utilizing machine learning preferred
  • Knowledge of and experience working with AI, VR, AR, and other emerging technologies preferred
  • Demonstrate mastery in the fundamentals of graphic design, such as color, composition, and typography preferred
  • Experience working on challenges related extremism, authoritarianism, systemic injustice and the use and abuse of technology preferred

We believe that a diverse staff and an inclusive work environment that welcomes a range of perspectives make us stronger and more effective.
