VICE PRESIDENT, DEVELOPMENT


The Cancer Support Community (CSC) is the largest professionally-led nonprofit network of cancer support worldwide. CSC is dedicated to ensuring that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community. CSC is seeking a Vice President, Development to lead its overall fund development program.


Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Vice President, Development provides the leadership, strategy, and management for major components of the organizations fundraising efforts. They will develop and execute the strategy for diversifying and increasing contributed revenue. In addition to a high-touch stewardship and donor recognition program, the Vice President, Development will provide leadership on an institutional, corporate and legacy giving strategy, foundation and grants, and manage a major gifts portfolio.


The individual selected for this role will be experienced in developing fund development strategies and have a proven track record of meeting revenue goals. Foster a culture of philanthropy and ensure that fund development is executed in keeping with the organization's values, vision, and mission.

The incumbent will report to the Chief Executive Officer. S/he will also be a member of the Senior Leadership Team and actively interact with the Board of Directors. The position requires collaboration with staff in the Finance, Operations, Marketing, Communications, Education, Research, Policy, and Program departments.


MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Leadership and Management

  • Work collaboratively with Chief Executive Officer to develop, implement and evaluate long-term goals and strategies to diversify and grow revenue in support of CSC’s mission.
  • Manage all aspects of the Development Department giving, including, but not limited to, securing donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Manage the ongoing stewardship of donors. Timely and successful execution of fundraising goals, strategic plan goals, and other tasks as assigned.
  • Identifies, cultivates, and solicits partnerships with corporations and institutional funders at national levels and develop trusted relationships with a portfolio of partners, acting as primary point of contact.
  • This position requires active participation at the Senior Management level, building a culture of philanthropy, effective execution, and strong communication across the organization.
  • Confer with Board members, existing major donors, and other key stakeholders to identify prospects within their personal or professional networks.
  • Anticipate the needs of executive leadership, providing real-time updates on revenue and relevant changes to partners.

Fundraising and Financial Management

  • Oversee development of CSC’s annual revenue budget, collaborate with CEO, COO, and Senior Leadership team on the overall budget; explore opportunities to grow revenue.
  • Manage a portfolio of top donors.
  • Ensure that a strong working relationship is taking place between the Operations and Finance Departments, with full monthly reconciliation and close management of cash flow.
  • Produce an un-reconciled Gift Detail Report weekly; reconcile the report with Finance monthly.
  • Produce reports for the Development Committee of the Board, as requested, to ensure the committee is adequately informed.
  • Manage the personalized communication strategies with and the fulfillment of customized sponsorship benefits and reporting requirements for all funders
  • Coordinate cross-departmentally on fulfillment of program and marketing deliverables
  • Act as a primary liaison to the programming, education, and research teams to solicit information about programs and projects as they are developed
  • Seek out new funding possibilities to establish organizational priorities and areas where collaborative efforts will advance the CSC towards achievement of its goals
  • Manage all aspects of the major donor fundraising program, including personal solicitations, prospect research and tracking, and donor stewardship or cultivation events
  • Establish standard practices for identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, acknowledgment, and stewardship of major donors
  • Manage the rhythm of business for all proposals, impact reports, and revenue tracking.
  • Work with senior CSC leadership and other Development staff to implement best practices that encourage retention and lead to increased support among current donors
  • Engage a portfolio of select donors and prospects with frequent personalized communication via phone, email, and visits
  • Execute integrated major-donor engagement, including oversight of scheduling, coordinating meetings, and facilitating follow-up communication

QUALIFICATIONS


Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 10+ years in development-related role that include responsibility for diversifying fundraising streams and maintaining relationships with donors and corporate partners
  • Experience working closely with a CEO, board members, and organizational leadership
  • Demonstrated accomplishments and experience in securing new financial support from individuals, corporations, and foundations
  • Extensive experience maximizing the use of donor management software

Skills:

  • Experience in implementing strategic goals in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction and guidance
  • Strong communication skills with a proven ability to work effectively with team members and stakeholders
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with ability to evaluate and analyze situations to provide recommendations for solutions
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills.
  • Must be able to motivate a team to action and keep order amongst competing interests.
  • Proficiency in data collection and analysis tools related to individual donor programs, foundation networks, and online fundraising
  • Demonstrated team-building and leadership skills
  • Detail-oriented

WORK LOCATION
CSC offers several options for where you may work. Position may be located at a CSC headquarters office in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, or New York, on a full-time basis or on a hybrid (in office/ work from home) model. You may also choose to work remotely from any location in the United States.
