POSITION SUMMARY:

As a Vice President (VP) on Kemper Life Actuarial team, you will assist the chief actuaries in establishing and leading a world-class valuation/reserving function and team to facilitate the continued growth of the organization. This position will interact closely with other leaders throughout the organization to create valuation and financial reporting, management reporting, financial planning/forecasting, ALM and Economic Capital Modeling. Additionally, this position will work closely with the data science team to develop advanced analytic tools to evaluate and manage the entire valuation reporting and projection cycle.

Location: This position can be in Chicago, IL, St. Louis, MO, or remote.

  • Travel will be required as the business necessitates.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as Appointed Actuary for Kemper Life (and Kemper Health if qualified)
  • Build Kemper Life’s in house valuation function and lead a sophisticated valuation, reserving and modeling team for Life
  • Collaborate with leaders from other areas in the analysis and management of the company’s products (Finance, Operations, Claims, and Data Science)
  • Hire, manage, mentor, and develop a high-performing actuarial team.
  • Direct monthly, quarterly and annual valuation processes. Deliver timely, accurate and auditable reports for GAAP, Statutory, and Tax as well as analysis of financial trends and forecasts.
  • Direct monitoring and financial analysis of product line profitability (GAAP, value-added, statutory, etc.). Provide recommendations by reporting findings and business projections to senior management.
  • Within the governance framework, direct the creation and support for all needed actuarial assumptions for valuation or projection of various product lines.
  • Provide executive management with advice on the financial implications of business activities.
  • Evaluate and advise on the impact of long-range planning, introduction of new programs/ strategies and regulatory action.
  • Modernization of actuarial systems: Support projects to improve valuation systems and input data.
  • Hold overall responsibility and accountability for actuarial reporting, cash flow testing, valuation, assumption setting, asset/liability management, and reserving.
  • Calculate risk capital for enterprise risk management, including model development and enhancements.
  • Lead and support the forecasting of future premiums and claims.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics or related field, or the equivalent in related work experience.
  • Fellow of the Society of Actuaries
  • 10 or more years of Life Actuarial experience, preferably with valuation, reserving and/or modeling.
  • 5 or more years of management experience and/or experience leading teams and/or projects of various sizes and complexity
  • Experience in a publicly-traded company
  • Preference given to candidate with experience in GAAP LDTI
  • Health insurance experience is a nice to have
  • Strong understanding of traditional life, accident & health products and riders to include valuation and reserving methodologies and compliance requirements.
  • Develop and manage a team that is strong in both innovative thinking and technical skills.
  • Experience providing internal service to a business, forming strong relationships, understanding client experiences and expectations and working to anticipate needs.
  • Will be able to review others work for reasonableness and identify opportunities for enhancement.
  • Experience with GGY-AXIS or similar actuarial modeling software
