Are you a Leader? This position will provide direct oversight and support to warming sheltering service staff and volunteers at ARCHES Warming Shelters during the cold season between October and March. Adverse weather conditions and/or a drop in temperature to 32 degrees (F) or below means our shelters are activated for those living outside without housing or shelter. Our goal is to reduce harm and save lives and we need your help! We have 6 Lead positions available to staff shelters for the season. Bilingual Spanish preferred but not required.

Responsibilities include supporting shelter operations including intake, cleaning, checking in guests assisting clients with navigation to resources, stocking supplies, distribution of food, clothing, mats and blankets, de-escalation, and ensuring a warm, safe and caring environment out of the cold. Leads are also responsible for training shelter Site Assistants and enforcing policies and procedures, cleaning and safety protocols, and escalating issues to management and/or law enforcement when necessary.

Lead Site Assistants work between several sites, with multiple shifts covering overnight shelter operations. Hours are scheduled between 5pm and 8am during emergency shelter activations. Staff may be assigned daytime hours to support agency operations and occasional overtime could be available.

This position has full-time and on-call options available. The pay rate for full-time, benefitted Shelter Leads is $19.50 per hour. The pay rate for on-call, non-benefitted Leads is $26.50 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED) preferred but not required; Three or more years of work experience in a public or social services role; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of/or experience working with the homeless, vulnerable or at-risk populations is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

  • Ability to work with short notice when weather temperatures drop in order to Lead Warming operations. Leads must be consistently available to work for the entire season (October through March).
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills and the ability to follow instructions from program management.
  • Demonstrates tact, diplomacy and empathy when communicating formally and informally with guests, staff, volunteers and program partners.
  • Ability to learn shelter protocols, safety procedures, and proper cleaning duties.
  • Drive Status (clean drive record for previous 5 years, and auto insurance) to transport unsheltered guests in agency vehicles preferred. Non-driving positions are also available.

  • Facilitates communication and collaboration between Shelter Assistants, facility host and volunteers.
  • Focuses team toward primary goals of ARCHES and the Emergency Services Program and exemplifies the positive culture.
  • Ensures data collection and quality. Inputs service usage information.
  • Assists shelter guests with gathering and storing personal belongings.
  • Facilitates transportation of shelter guests to and from shelters using agency vehicles or other contracted transportation means.
  • May be assigned shifts and other responsibilities that further program goals and objectives, to include but not limited to street outreach and other emergency use shelters and transitional facilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

  • Requires hearing and vision abilities, and the ability to communicate with others and respond to potential emergencies.
  • Requires frequent personal mobility between areas of the shelter and/or sites.
  • Regularly lift and/or move 10-20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity for handling personal items, food, clothing, sacks, carts and use of computers and written in-take processing.
  • Requires multi-tasking, including the ability to collaborate with staff, volunteers and guests.
  • Requires frequent moving/walking and standing/remaining stationary in the shelter setting and outdoor spaces.
  • Requires ability to stay calm and alert during the shift.
  • Driving transport vans when authorized according to safety protocols. Must have cleared HR Drive Status prescreening.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Close quarters, often with a client population experiencing homelessness, substance use disorders, and/or severe and persistent mental illness, and/or unpredictable behavior.
  • Indoor work environment with frequent interruptions and demands.
  • Exposure to trash and potential biohazards.
  • Occasional urgent situations requiring law enforcement involvement and/or paramedic professionals.
  • Occasional exposure to bodily fluids and malodorous air requires PPE such as masking, gloves, gowns, and safety glasses (optional).
