The City of Lancaster is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Laborer I for the Water Department. This position is responsible for heavy manual work pertinent to the maintenance, repair, installation, and replacement of various water distribution system components. Various assignments associated with routine departmental activities. Development of job skills and job knowledge pertinent to the operation of the distribution system and maintenance practices.

Essential Functions
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)

Perform manual work and assists in the installation, replacement, maintenance, and repair of various water system components such as service lines, water mains, fire hydrants, and valves.

Perform manual work and assists in the accomplishment of various tasks associated with routine departmental activities such as buildings and ground maintenance, painting, cleaning of tanks, materials storage, and equipment maintenance.

Participate in training activities and performs work as directed to acquire job skills and job knowledge of the distribution system. For example, operation, maintenance, and repair of various types of powered equipment such as vans, dump trucks, boom trucks, front loader/backhoe, bulldozer, large and small air compressors, pumps, jackhammers, rotary saws, welders, etc.

Assist in distribution system operation and maintenance practices such as hydrant flushing, line/leak location, service line and water main repair, street and job site restoration, hydrant and valve repair, etc.

Subject to emergency call in, overtime work, and night shift work as required.

May use any of a variety of hand tools and powered equipment associated with the job duties described above.

Perform other duties as related to the essential functions of this position.

Job Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.

One-year prior work experience (work in plumbing or construction preferred).

Must be physically able to work outdoors in all types of weather.

Must be physically able to perform heavy manual work.

Valid Ohio driver’s license and insurable under City of Lancaster’s policy. Must be able to obtain CDL by end of probationary period.
