Salary: $52,000 minimum

The Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science seeks an outstanding candidate for the position of Desktop Administrator to work as part of the Information Technology team. Duties will include configuring and deploying physical and virtual computing environments and managing hardware and software assets. This position provides end-user support for the students, faculty, and staff of Watson College.

The individual in this position will be responsible for setting up and maintaining instructional and laboratory computing environments. The candidate should possess the skill set to resolve computer and network issues, assist faculty, staff, and students with computer-related problems; manage and track hardware and software inventories and assist with configuring and managing virtual desktop systems.

Watson College offers a diverse computing environment. This position requires the ability to remediate computer issues and upgrade operating systems and software. The successful candidate will provide operational support and assist with computer system configuration, specification, and deployment. The Desktop Administrator will provide end-user support for the following:

  • Installing new and replacement computing equipment and support the use of PC desktop computers in networked technology classrooms and computing labs, and offices
  • Collaborating with faculty and staff in upgrading and implementing new applications and technologies
  • Installing new software releases and system upgrades in academic and research labs
  • Performing corrective maintenance, diagnostics, problem resolution, and minor computer repair
  • Maintaining inventory of all supported computer systems, software installation locations
  • Assisting faculty and staff with various computer technologies
  • Maintaining and reviewing a centrally located repository of documentation

This position requires collaboration with the campus Information Technology group to coordinate overlapping services and necessitates working collegially and professionally with all campus community members. Adherence to Binghamton University security policies and procedures is required. The successful candidate will occasionally need to work outside of their regular working hours when performing system maintenance that impacts the university's daily operation and during emergencies involving campus or college systems.


Job Requirements:

  • Associate degree (or higher) in Information Technology or related field
  • Familiarity managing Windows Server and desktop operating systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot computer related issues
  • Ability to work with diverse populations
  • Ability to lift at least 30 pounds
  • Able to occasionally work outside of regular working hours
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position

Preferred:

  • At minimum 1-year work experience or internship in an IT support environment
  • Experience with Linux and/or Mac OS
  • Experience with VMware products
  • Familiarity with Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager
  • Experience working with VMware Horizon View
  • Familiarity with any of the engineering desktop applications used in the college, such as ANSYS, MATLAB, Creo, SolidWorks, Arena, AutoCAD, SAS, Python, R, RStudio, etc.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
