JOB SUMMARY

Utilizing a combination of school-based and work-based learning to provide students with employability and occupational skills. Students are taught by qualified skilled work site mentors to prepare for careers while still in high school, developing the technical and specific on the job skills. Responsibilities include preparation of parts, welding, grinding, painting, labeling, and bundling or crating pipe for the customer. YA – Manufacturing Techs must have the ability to use a ruler, square, templates and gages in addition to a base knowledge of welding principles and techniques. Willingness to perform a variety of duties and cross train is essential.

Requirements:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participates in on-the-job mentored training of 450 or more work hours.
  • Fulfills all high school classroom requirements and coordinates work availability with schooling schedule.
  • Able and willing to engage in a variety of manufacturing processes including semi-automatic welding, machine operation, assembly, and shipping.
  • Abides by all organizational policies and procedures.
  • Operates equipment in a safe manner and uses safe work habits. Maintains a safe and clean working environment including complying with safety procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Prepares all material surfaces to be welded ensuring that there is no loose or thick scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other foreign matter.
  • Removes rough spots from work pieces using portable grinders, hand files, or scrapers.
  • Cleans or degreases parts using a wire brush, portable grinder or chemical bath.
  • Welds steel components with welding equipment as specified by procedures, layouts, blueprints, diagrams, work orders, or oral instructions.
  • Examines work pieces for defects including use of weld gages or tape measures to ensure conformance with specifications.
  • Chips or grinds off excess weld, slag, or spatter using hand scrapers, portable grinders, or arc-cutting equipment.
  • Uses a paint gun to spray primer paint and gloss onto parts.
  • Recognizes visual defects prior to painting and work with supervision to remedy basic quality issues.
  • Labels all painted pipe with the appropriate labels for the job order.
  • Loads pipe and parts into a crate, places on a cart, or bundles for shipment to the customer.
  • Potentially operates forklifts, cranes, hoists, slings, grinders, hand tools, and instruments of measurements as appropriate for the assigned work.
  • Assists with cleaning of the paint booth including changing paint filters and additional booth maintenance.
  • Willing to cross train and performs the work of other job tasks when necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Junior or Senior age 16 or above (Wis. Admin.Code & DWD 270.13(15).)
  • Must want to learn through job experience

  • Basic mathematical skills such as addition, subtraction, fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to perform precise measurements using a tape measure, square and weld gages
  • Basic computer skills required to accurately gather and input data from computer systems

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

[Intermittent (less than 15%), Occasional (15-45%), Frequent (50-75%), and Continuous (over 75%).]

  • Physical movement to include continuous standing, walking, twisting/turning, repetitive hand motions/twisting, and forearm rotation. Frequent stooping/bending, pushing/pulling and reaching above shoulders. Occasional climbing/balancing and sitting. Intermittent sitting or squatting.
  • Lifting and carrying up to 50lbs frequently. Some lifting above the shoulders.
  • Hand movement, specifically simple and gross grasping. Some fine manipulation
  • Vision: specifically, the ability to see both closely and at a distance, color, peripheral, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Mathematical skill including counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, fractions, units of measurement in metric and standard, metric conversions and tolerances.
  • Reading comprehension including prints, job orders, and work instructions.
  • Clear verbal communication including the ability to talk and listen.
  • Typing on a keyboard and ability to manipulate a mouse.
  • Personal Protective Equipment including safety glasses, steel toed boots with metatarsals, hearing protection, and face shield. A respirator and paint suit must be worn while performing painting operations in the cell.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Production environment with some exposure to heat and cold temperatures. Outdoor exposure as needed to gather materials from the outdoor yard may be required.
  • Exposure to plant noise, fumes, grinding and cutting sparks, and cleaning solvents.
  • Machinery and equipment including fork trucks, cranes, etc.
  • Work is performed in a cellular environment requiring adherence to identified productivity and efficiency rates while operating multiple “machines” or centers in the cell.
  • Will regularly access a computer to clock job transactions. Will also need to record quality documentation.
