This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 20 hours per week) Student Support Services (Strategist) positions for the Academic Success Center at Oregon State University (OSU).

The Academic Success Center (ASC) creates opportunities for students to learn how to learn throughout their academic careers. Our services support students as they practice skills and habits for academic success, learn with and from their peers, and reflect on their ongoing development as scholars. Through partnerships with OSU faculty and staff, our work promotes a university culture that responds to students’ needs and affirms each student’s ability to achieve their goals.
ASC Strategists assist fellow students by sharing academic tools and learning strategies, and by helping them navigate and access resources at OSU that could support their success. They serve as the first point of contact for the Academic Success Center and are responsible for consulting students on a drop-in basis. ASC strategists also support fellow ASC staff with various projects and tasks related to academic coaching, student success, and outreach. Paid training for this position is expected to begin spring term 2022. Strategist shifts will begin in fall term 2022 and candidates are expected to continue working through the 2022-2023 academic year.
The primary objective of the ASC Strategist is to engage students in conversation and to provide consultation during drop-in hours. Conversations happen in our Waldo 125 space, over the phone, via Live Chat on our website, and through email communication. This position requires successful candidates to participate in ongoing learning of campus resources, demonstrate exceptional listening skills, work collaboratively as a team, and represent the Strategist Program in a way that reflects the ASC’s mission and values. Anticipated workload may range from 5 – 10 hours per week depending on the student’s schedule and desired work hours.
I. Consultations
- Learn about each visitor’s unique needs
- Troubleshoot visitor concerns and challenges
- Validate each visitor’s ability to succeed
- Offer referrals and action steps
- Follow up via email
- Track conversations while maintaining confidentiality
- Explain the ASC’s programs and services
- Attend weekly professional development meetings
- Debrief with fellow strategists and other ASC staff
II. Additional Duties
- Complete projects assigned by the Coordinator and other ASC staff
- Support the Academic Coaching program with administrative tasks
- Answer multi-line phone
- Clean and organize the ASC front space

- Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
- Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
- Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
- High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
- Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
- Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
- Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
- Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
- International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
- Demonstration of effective communication skills (examples include the ability to listen, ask questions, and give/receive feedback)
- Good academic standing
- Federal Work-Study eligible
- Strong organizational skills (needed for administrative work and email correspondence)
- Ability to adapt approach and individualize support to the person you are working with
- Experience working or collaborating with individuals with a diverse range of backgrounds, perspectives, and definitions of success
- Minimum of one completed term at OSU
