The Division of Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery at UMass Memorial Medical Center, the clinical partner of the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School, seeks applications from qualified individuals for the position of an Academic Complex General Surgical Oncologist at our Center to start in the late summer or fall of 2023. UMMMC is the only tertiary care facility in central Massachusetts and covers over one million lives. The system is comprised of 1,1117 licensed beds (plus 90 bassinets), 4 owned hospitals, and six affiliated hospitals throughout central Massachusetts. Our Cancer Program sees more than 3000 new patients per year.
The successful applicant will have demonstrated both academic interests and clinical excellence during their fellowship as well as possess the interpersonal skills to represent the institution in the community and be an effective teacher. This person will also have the training and technical skills to help advance the application of robotics in complex UGI and HBP surgical oncology. Academic appointment will be at the Assistant Professor level. The Division welcomes applications as well as recommendations for this position.
The Division of Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery is one of 9 subspecialty divisions within the Department of Surgery, which also contains three residency programs and two fellowships. We function in an established, disease-oriented, multi-disciplinary Cancer Program located in beautifully appointed space in the Cancer Center and which includes all medical and nursing specialties involved in the modern care of cancer patients. We have a collegial working atmosphere, two practicing General surgical oncologists, four practicing breast surgeons, two full-time advanced practitioners, a high-risk Pancreatic Cancer screening program, and a designated surgical oncology rotation in the General surgical residency. We have close working relationships with our group of highly skilled advanced GI interventional endoscopists as well as with the interventional radiologists and Body Imaging specialists. We have recently been designated a Pancreatic Cancer Center of Excellence by the National Pancreas Foundation. We have an active Cancer Research Office which oversees the conduct of a large clinical trials portfolio. Our institution is a regional leader in robotic surgery and possess the infrastructure and experience to support advanced robotic procedures. A broad array of other opportunities for academic advancement ranging from translational, basic and outcomes research through education research are also available through the UMass Chan Medical School which is co-located with us.
Centrally located, Worcester is just miles from Boston, Providence, and Cape Cod and a short ride to the scenic Berkshire and Wachusett Mountains. The diverse city of Worcester has nine colleges and universities including the University of Massachusetts Medical School, that overlooks the beautiful panoramic views of Lake Quinsigamond.
