The Access Coordinator works with students, faculty, staff, and administration to identify the impact of specific disabilities presenting challenges to student learning and to develop accessibility strategies to promote student learning. This position is responsible for making immediate decisions regarding the access of learning materials in alternate format and reasonable technological accommodations based on the impact of a disability. The Access Coordinator will work to ensure campus wide compliance to the standards set forth by Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act/WCAG 2.0 AA Standards mitigating risk for the university and will work towards developing a universal approach to information access on the campus.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Maintain and further develop the adaptive technology tools, this includes alternative text production, management of appropriate software and management of adaptive technology tools, and researching innovative AT tools; train students and staff on the use of adaptive technology tools, including managing adaptive technology inventory (live scribe materials, recorders, iPads, etc.); work with university partners to discuss and implement Accessible Electronic and Information Access on campus, this includes providing resources and training regarding accessible document/website creation.

Knowledge in the specified areas of adaptive technologies when working with disabled students and applicable understanding of ADA/504/Section 508/WCAG 2.0-AAA/other related state and federal laws relating to disabilities; use of innovative solutions to solve problems and modify solutions when competing needs are present.

These specific skills to be utilized in access appointment and supporting students with disabilities; utilizing customer service skills, ability to build positive relationships with students and campus partners; exercises latitude to determine objective and complete tasks without supervision, consulting on complex problems and crises.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act as revised
  • Knowledge of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act
  • Knowledge of WCAG 2.0 AA Standards
  • Ability to engage in professional development and bring back important accessibility information to campus
  • Ability to make documents accessible in a timely manner
  • Ability to find creative solutions to access difficulties
  • Ability to stay informed of new and emerging technology
  • Skill set for training on existing and new technology
  • Ability to maintain professional demeanor in potentially difficult situations
  • Knowledge of the impact of federal, state, and local legislation

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Exceptional Education, Counseling, Rehab, Counseling, Social Work, or relevant field; and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree; AT Certification; three or more years working with students with disabilities in a higher education setting; experience working on a collaborative team, ability to problem solve independently, ability to research and report on trending technology issues/updates.
