HOURLY SALARY:
$37.28-$42.69


LOCATIONS

The work locations include Santa Ana, Orange, Fullerton, Westminster and Newport Beach. This position may be assigned to one or all of these locations.

ABOUT THE POSITION
Part-time and full-time positions are available. The American Sign Language Interpreter (ASL) actively interprets court proceedings and legal documents for members of the public and court staff; interacts with a variety of court staff, judicial officers, outside agencies, and members of the public; and performs related tasks within area of assignment.

Please note that this recruitment will remain open until the needs of the Court have been met and may close at any time. However, the deadline for first-round consideration is Friday, January 31, 2020 at 11:59 PM PST.

This recruitment is open to external candidates, internal OCSC employees, internal OCSC promotions, and internal OCSC lateral transfers. The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future positions.

Examples of Duties

(These functions are intended as a general illustration of the work performed in this job classification and are not all inclusive for this position)

  • Interprets court proceedings using simultaneous and consecutive modes of communications.
  • Interprets for attorneys, Court staff, judicial officers, and members of the public; jurors, litigants, legal counsel and any other participants of the proceedings.
  • Researches and interprets terminologies and functions used in a courtroom; includes technological, scientific, and/or medical terminology.
  • Evaluates the work environment to ensure nothing impedes the ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Coordinates with a partner to deliver a seamless line of communication; rotates with other interpreters as needed to meet the needs of the courtroom.
  • Reviews and executes daily calendar assignments issued by the assigned supervisor and accurately completes daily activity logs, and other required documentation.
  • Performs other language interpretation duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Option 1
Certificate: Possession of an active "Specialist Certificate: Legal" issued by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or equivalent from another state or nationally recognized testing agency.

-OR-

Option 2
Certificate: Possession of a previous "Specialist Certificate: Legal" issued by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) -AND-
Experience: One (1) year full-time (or equivalent) of active and extensive experience as a sign language interpreter in a legal setting.

Selection Process
Step 1: Applications will be reviewed to identify candidates who meet the minimum qualifications and/or desirables; those candidates will be referred to step 2 in the selection process.

Step 2: Candidates' supplemental question responses may be evaluated and ranked. Depending on the number of applications, assessments and/or screening interviews may be conducted. If any part of the assessment process consists of proctored, in-person tests, candidates will be required to appear in person regardless of where they reside. Note: Though candidates may live outside of the State of California while participating in a recruitment process, individuals must reside within the State to be eligible for Court employment.

Step 3: Those candidates who are successful in the review/assessment may be placed on the eligible list. Placement on the eligible list is not a guarantee of interview or employment.

All candidates will be notified via email of their status at each step of the process. Additional steps for the selection process will include a local background and reference check.
