Example Contract dates:
- January 9, 2023 – August 5, 2023 (30 Week Contract);
- January 23, 2023 –August 19, 2023 (30 Week Contract);
- Contract start and end dates are flexible and rotate on a bi-weekly schedule
900 Hours Contract - Minimum of 30 hours/week
Compensation: Living Allowance Total: $ 12,600 ($840 every 2 weeks over 30 weeks) + Education Award: $ 3,247.50*

DESCRIPTION: AmeriCorps is a national service programs that each take a different approach to improving lives and fostering civic engagement. AmeriCorps Members commit their time to address critical community needs like increasing academic achievement, mentoring youth, fighting poverty, sustaining national parks, preparing for disasters, and more. In return, members receive a modest living allowance and an educational award that can be used to pay educational costs at eligible post-secondary educational institutions or qualified student loans. Members who are 55+ years of age can transfer award to child or grandchild.
The Teen Education Specialist AmeriCorps Member will serve alongside their Site Supervisor at Hillcrest Family Services to provide public health education to teenaged youth in Dubuque. These members provide community engagement and skill-building programming to have the following impacts:
(1) Youth experience programs promoting healthy lifestyles resulting in decreased youth risk-related behaviors.
(2) Youth development skills to build meaningful and healthy relationships while experiencing inclusion and belonging.
(3) Providing every young person with the opportunity to grow up safely and access their best possible future.
SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Cooperate closely with AmeriCorps members serving at the Multicultural Family Center to create and develop collaboration on teen-focused programming between the program partners.
- Coordinate with CAPP Health Education/Tobacco Lead, the HIV Health Educator and the Mentor Dubuque Coordinator to develop and implement prevention education around risk-related behaviors in teenaged populations.
- Develop and implement life skill development match activities for teen matches in the Mentor Dubuque Program.
- Support Mentor Dubuque's development into teenaged community mentoring alongside the Teen Engagement Specialist with the Multicultural Family Center
- Develop educational curriculum focusing on:
- STD education, Romantic relationship safety education, safe sex education, teen pregnancy
- Resource referrals to community resources for teen parents or pregnant teens
- Smoking cessation education and prevention
- HIV education and Opioid Education
- Trauma-Informed Care and ACEs Education
- Attends IMP, CAPP, Tobacco and Coalition Meetings at request of Supervisor.
- Develop, implement and facilitate ISTEP – Iowa Students for Tobacco Education and Prevention student organization meetings.
- Attend Dubuque community events representing Hillcrest Family Services with CAP, Mentor Dubuque, HIV and Tobacco
- Maintain and uphold confidentiality practices and policies.
- Attend all AmeriCorps trainings and service projects.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Applicant must have a high school diploma or equivalent; or be in the process of completing their high school diploma or equivalent.
- Applicant must be at least 17 years of age.
- Applicant must pass three-part Criminal History Background Check because of reoccurring access to vulnerable populations.
- Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident or U.S. National to serve with AmeriCorps Programs.
- Must be competent in working with at-risk youth, teenaged youth, marginalized populations and discussing topics related to diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Applicant must have reliable transportation.
- Applicant must be creative, energetic, dependable and a self-starter.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Position requires service member to sit at a desk for long periods of time
- Some repetitive motions such as typing
- Occasionally involves lifting, squatting, bending over, and engaging in other physical activities
SERVICE SCHEDULE: Service activities will take place predominately at Hillcrest Family Services. The AmeriCorps Member must be able to serve from 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Contract may include some evenings and weekends. Members may be asked to serve at special events and activities within the grant partnership that may be outside of the member's normal service hours. Members are required to attend the monthly training offered to all AmeriCorps Members within the AmeriCorps Program as well as the National Days of Service. Site Supervisors will plan a quarterly service schedule in calendar format in which both the member and site supervisor will agree and adhere to. This schedule is meant to outline how the member will successfully get to the allotted hours within the term limits.
The program may require the member to engage in other allowable activities that are not specifically outlined in the position description, but that support the AmeriCorps program design, and which help the program meet its goals. In no circumstance will members be asked to perform prohibited activities outlined in the Member Service Agreement.
