Position Summary Information

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Education, Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Student Development, or related field.
  • 3 years of relevant professional experience in an academic advising setting.
  • Experience in developing and supporting professional develop and/or career enrichment programming.
  • Experience implementing strategies to recruit and retain students, especially students from underrepresented populations.
  • Experience working with or leading and supporting student groups, associations, and/or activities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
  • Possess excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends to support the work of the JCSSA, college and/or university events.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Five or more years of relevant professional experience in an academic advising setting.
  • Five or more years of experience in the development and implementation of professional develop and career enrichment programming.
  • Three or more years of Experience implementing strategies to recruit and retain students, especially students from underrepresented populations.
  • Experience planning and implementation of curriculum and programming around Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
  • Public school teaching experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Director for Recruitment and Retention Initiatives will work collaboratively with the Director of JCSSA to support efforts to recruit, retain and advise teacher education candidates in the Reich College of Education (RCOE).

This position will serve as the academic advising team leader with responsibilities that include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Collect key performance indicators for monitoring and assessing the academic advising program.
  • Serve as an Academic Advisor with a reduced advising caseload to support RCOE student populations and programs including, transfer and online students.
  • Create and maintain an effective schedule for advising sessions and advising-related programming.
  • Working collaboratively with the Director of the JCSSA to develop appropriate case loads for advisors.
  • Assess progress to degree concerns and issues alongside the Director to identify necessary interventions and develop plans and programming to address those needs.
  • Coordinate student retention efforts for the RCOE through the James Center for Student Success and Advising.
  • Develop programming that supports the retention of underrepresented populations in accordance with the college and university goals towards equity and inclusion.
  • Collaborate with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders (e.g., RCOE faculty and staff, other Appalachian State University academic departments, the Director of the Public School Partnership, public school districts, etc.) to create, coordinate, and communicate meaningful professional development to Appalachian State University pre-service educators.
  • Collaborate with the Director of the Public School Partnership to work with P-12 teachers (in-service educators) and other stakeholders in the field, including travel to schools and other community sites as needed to provide professional development opportunities.
  • Collaborate with Alumni Affairs to engage Appalachian State University alumni in pre-service teacher professional development efforts (e.g., facilitating workshops, participating in networking sessions, etc).
  • Collaborate with the James Center for Student Success and Advising’s Assistant Director for Student Engagement to support retention, persistence, and completion for student groups’ programming in the Appalachian Community of Education Scholars (ACES) cohorts, to include participation in ACES activities and special events as needed.
  • Coordinate pre-service teachers’ planning and preparation to meet licensure requirements (e.g., required testing for admission to teacher education and licensure).
  • Serve on the JCSSA Leadership Team in order to collaborate with and provide feedback and guidance to the Director.
  • Engage in assessment and continuous improvement of all academic advising and retention efforts, including as necessary through collaboration with the Director of Assessment and Accreditation.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director of Admissions for Teacher Education Recruitment to plan and host on-campus recruitment events.
  • Serve as a liaison to the Undergraduate Program Directors Committee and the Professional Education Council in order to promote and seek feedback on the work of the James Center for Student Success and Advising.
  • Fulfill other relevant duties as necessary and assigned.
