Responsibilities*

Undergraduate Program Oversight

  • Serve as the lead staff member for the Electrical and Computer (ECE) undergraduate program, which includes two academic majors and one academic minor serving traditionally admitted students, cross-campus transfer students, external domestic and international transfer students, and incoming exchange students.
  • Lead collaborative efforts with other College of Engineering student-facing teams and offices (e.g. Registrar’s Office, Office of Student Affairs, Recruitment and Admissions, Engineering Advising Center, Engineering Career Resource Center, International Programs in Engineering, Honors and Engagement, Retention and Academic Support, Student Health and Wellness) on the undergraduate student experience.
  • Lead current undergraduate student communication efforts and strategy in consultation with other student-facing staff teams and offices, faculty and ECE administrators. Update and maintain ongoing content creation for the advising website, weekly newsletters, monthly advisor updates and other advising publications.
  • Work closely with the Computer Engineering Chief Program Advisor and the Electrical Engineering Chief Program Advisor to provide insight on academic and student affairs-related topics including student success activities (accommodations, probation, student reporting, academic integrity/honor code, and petitions).
  • Work collaboratively to foster a diverse, inclusive, and quality student experience, while promoting the values of pluralism, diversity, equity, inclusion, and multiculturalism.
  • Provide project management for academic program committee initiatives and draft proposals for new programs and initiatives as needed.
  • Contribute to the development of short- and long-term plans for academic programs.
  • Recommend and implement program initiatives to support student learning, retention and persistence, including transfer orientation planning and implementation of student success activities.
  • Assist in production, organization, and execution of all ECE undergraduate student events, including the ECE Open House, Declare ECE!, College of Engineering Majors Fair, ENGR 110 department representation, Campus Days, Do You Want To Go To Grad School?, EECS Honors and Awards Ceremony, etc.

Campus Partnerships

  • Foster working relationships with and serve as ECE advising staff liaison to other undergraduate program staff and advisors around the College of Engineering and at other schools and colleges at U-M.
  • Promote ECE’s campus presence by serving on relevant campus wide committees and working groups focused on academic advising, policy development, and/or student development, support, and retention.
  • Partner with central student life units around oversight of student success and retention for all ECE undergraduate students (e.g. CAPS, SSD, SAPAC).

Enrollment Consultation and Activity

  • Advise administration on semester-by-semester and annual course enrollment projections for undergraduate students in EECS courses, including EECS 200, EECS 215, EECS 216, EECS 230, EECS 300, and EECS 314.
  • Oversee undergraduate student records, ensuring accuracy from declaration through graduation. Develop appropriate procedures for tracking degree requirements. Approve degrees for undergraduate students and develop degree lists each semester.
  • Serve as lead staff member on all undergraduate enrollment processes in ECE-specific courses.
  • Collaborate on efforts to recruit diverse, highly qualified students to the CE and EE major.

Administration

  • Oversee the collection of relevant data and the administration of records and standards to track student data. Participate in assessment of academic and student affairs for academic programs. Manage ongoing development of annual student surveys, and identify and implement other assessment needs. Manage data collection for the completion and submission of surveys and reports related to students and academic programs.
  • Remain informed regarding current trends in higher education student affairs through continued engagement in the field (e.g. conference attendance, literature reviews, workshops, etc.). Analyze and incorporate knowledge into continuous improvement of ECE programs and practices as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including assisting with activities for another academic program and/or across academic programs in support of student success.
  • Oversee and participate in all academic advising activities for 800+ undergraduate students, including ongoing development of advising strategy, philosophy, and model.
  • Hire, train, and supervise undergraduate academic advisors and staff members
  • Manage advising in partnership with faculty and advisors in other student-facing offices.
  • Provide direct service advising including assisting students with strategies that promote academic and professional success. Provide ongoing consultation regarding complex student concerns, exceptional cases, and programmatic questions.
  • Oversee critical and/or elevated student cases, including serving as a lead advisor and case manager. Communicate and coordinate with students, faculty, families and U-M student advocacy units to connect students to relevant resources.
  • Oversee undergraduate students applying to ECE graduate programs, including serving as a lead advisor and case manager for students considering SUGS or the 3.4 program. Meet with students to arrange appropriate future course plans, review and approve double counting and transfer of relevant coursework to graduate school.
  • Respond to student concerns or disputes, connecting students to appropriate school and university resources.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, social work, counseling, or a related field in education or administration.
  • Minimum of 10+ years of increasing responsibility in academic program management, academic advising, student services or similar professional experience in an educational setting;
  • Strong organizational skills, with attention to accuracy and detail;
  • Demonstrated experience with process improvement and developing new initiatives;
  • Demonstrated experience in leading or mentoring student affairs professionals;
  • Demonstrated ability to use data effectively including collection of data, reviewing data for integrity, analyzing and identifying data trends, and making decisions based on data interpretation;
  • Experience in change management and ability to function effectively in a dynamic environment;
  • Experience supporting students holistically (e.g. assisting students having personal difficulties that interfere with their academic progress or success);
  • Experience supporting the needs of non-traditional student populations, including community-college and foreign transfer students;
  • Recruitment experience for students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels;
  • Experience planning events for undergraduate students and their families.
  • Experience creating and overseeing marketing and communications directed at the undergraduate population including website content, weekly newsletters, brochures, fact sheets, advertisements, flyers, presentations and targeted emails;
  • Experience developing and nurturing partnerships with related offices throughout the College of Engineering and University of Michigan.
  • Working familiarity of Wolverine Access, Business Objects, M-Pathways Student Administration System, Canvas;
  • Working knowledge of University policies and procedures, especially as they relate to undergraduate and graduate students.
