Assistant Director of Dining for Training and Employment

University Housing - Dining Services

Our Dining Services team works in a variety of roles, operating four all-you-care-to-eat dining halls, five retail locations and a food truck. We also provide catering services for the university community, creating the perfect experience for our clientele. Full-time and part-time opportunities within Dining Services include roles working in guest services, nutrition, operations, training, menu planning and more. We strive to ensure residents, staff and guests enjoy their full dining experiences, highlighted by delicious, healthy, fresh and sustainable meals.


Job Summary

This position provides leadership, strategic direction, and oversees the planning and execution of the recruitment, training, student employment and central staffing functions within the Dining Services Unit.

Duties & Responsibilities

Leadership and Supervision

  • Supervisors will engage and implement University Housing's diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Coordinate hiring practices and oversee training for Dining Services.
  • In coordination with the Inclusion and Talent Development unit, lead Dining Services in creating an inclusive work environment through training and development of professional staff regarding cultural competence and effective supervision.
  • Act as the point person for Dining Services hiring processes including working with Housing Human Resources staff to seek approval for filling staff vacancies and develop interview procedures and selection criteria.
  • Provide direction for dining employment, staffing, student employment, and culinary training including Culinary Training Coordinator, and Dining Student Employment Coordinator, the Central Staffing Unit Manager and the Office Administrator.
  • In coordination with Housing Human Resources, oversee the development and execution of hiring procedures, placement of new staff, and coordination of staff schedules.
  • Supervise critical employment procedures for unionized staff including position bidding and layoff procedures.
  • Ensure responsible, fair, and consistent practices when implementing policies and procedures.
  • Serve on the dining leadership team and contribute to unit, department and Student Affairs committees.
  • Lead initiatives as needed or directed.

Strategic Planning and Collaboration

  • Provide direction for strategic initiatives for student employment, hiring, staffing and training efforts.
  • Work collaboratively with Housing Human Resources and Illinois Human Resources to oversee and direct compliance with university hiring, interviewing, and administrative procedures.
  • Coordinate communication with Housing Information & Marketing regarding employment opportunities, customer communication and related information.
  • Oversees and directs the student employment office including providing oversite on the development of student schedules, performance management standards, and effective recruitment and retention practices.
  • Provide communication to all levels of staff regarding policy, procedure, and operational changes.
  • Engage and collaborate with the Director of Dining Services in both short and long-range strategic planning.
  • Initiate projects to enhance and improve services offered by Dining Service.

Training and Compliance

  • Ensure training programs follow compliance with all local, state and university policies and procedures.
  • Develop, execute, and document all required training and certifications including campus, state and federal requirements.
  • Direct, develop, and deliver staff training for full-time, part time, and student employees in conjunction with the Culinary Training Coordinator and Student Employment Office.
  • Train management staff regarding employment policies and procedures, performance manage, and effective supervision.
  • Develop, oversee and provide position specific training and orientation for management staff including performance management, supervision and customer service.
  • Establish training procedures that are respectful of the diverse resident, customer, and staff populations.
  • Ensure student employees are receiving required food handling and other training as required and maintain documentation.
  • Oversee the development of the employee handbooks and lead annual updates.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Any one or any combination of the following, totaling four years (48 months), from the categories below:
    • credit for college training leading to a major or concentration in education or other fields related to training and development such as human resource administration or business administration or closely related fields
      • 30 semester hours equals 12 months
      • 60 semester hours equals 24 months
      • 90 semester hours equals 36 months
      • 120 semester hours or a Bachelor's Degree equals 48 months
    • credit for college training leading to a major or concentration in fields other than those previously listed
      • Bachelor’s Degree equals 3 years (36 months)
      • Master’s Degree equals 4 years (48 months)
    • work experience as a human resource or training professional
  • Two years of professional work experience in the training and development profession 1

1 A Master's degree in education or other fields closely related to training and development (such as human resource administration or business administration) or a Master's degree with a concentration in these fields may be substituted for one year of such experience.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4693 - Training and Development Specialist I position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close date. The salary range for this position is $60,000 to $65,000.
