Assistant Principal
Reports to Principal
Full time- 7:30-3:30pm
12-month
*Majority of work is performed in a general school environment. Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours required to perform job duties. Also requires participation and attendance at organization-sponsored events and meetings.

Erie is built on the strong foundation of the nationally accredited program at Erie Neighborhood House, a progressive social service agency in Chicago's West Town community. Located in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood, Erie opened in September 2005 serving 80 students in kindergarten and first grade.
Currently the school has 415 students, grades Kindergarten through eighth.
PRIMARY FUNCTION
The Assistant Principal is a transformational leader responsible for supporting the Principal in upholding the school’s mission and vision and to assist in the creation of a school environment that empowers students to achieve ambitious academic goals, spanish language proficiency, and multicultural competence to prepare them for a diverse global society. The Assistant Principal will assist in the supervision of all aspects of school operations and in the absence of the Principal serves as the lead administrator consulting with the
Executive Director.
RESPONSIBILITIES
General
- Internalize and live Erie’s mission and vision to students, families, and community members
- Promote and model the Habits of Heart, Mind, and Work
- Promote and model an environment of equity, diversity and inclusion
- Use and model positively framed language, aligned with Responsive Classroom
- Develop and sustain positive relationships with all stakeholders
School Leadership
Assists Principal with:
- Promoting the vision/mission of the school and enlisting others to uphold this vision
- Managing the day-to-day school operations
- Creating all master schedules for student and teacher assignments
- Developing and implementing the school’s Strategic Plan
- Supervising students at activities, assemblies, social, and athletic events, as needed
- Supporting and promoting Erie’s school-wide approaches including Responsive Classroom,
Trauma-Informed practices, and Restorative Practices
- Supervising, assessing, and supporting the Dual Language Program
- Embodying and modeling professionalism, empathy, and student-centered problem solving
- Communicating with families and stakeholders
Instructional Leadership
- Sits on the school Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) and School Leadership Team (SLT)
- Supports the Bilingual Advisory Council (BAC) facilitator to develop and implement a high performing Dual Language Program that leads to Spanish proficiency for all students
- Supports student achievement and success across all contents and tiers of instruction
- Leads data conversations with individual teachers and school-based level teams
- Monitors and tracks trends in student performance across all academic areas, including Dual
Language, specialized instruction, special education, and English Language Learning, to ensure school performance toward meeting Erie’s mission and vision
- Provides social-emotional curriculum support and oversight to meet all students’ needs
- Coordinates and oversees all required testing administration in partnership with the Technology
Manager and all testing coordinators
- Supports teachers in implementing Common Core Standards based instruction
- Collaborate with SLT to ensure success and fidelity of Erie’s Dual Language Program
Coaching and Professional Development
- Support the implementation of the strategic plan to drive academic improvement by working with classroom teachers, Instructional Leadership Team (ILT), SLT and school administrators
- Use multiple data sources such as assessment data, observational data and comprehensive tracker data to coach and hold teacher’s accountable for student growth and performance
- Provide detailed teacher feedback in the following areas; instructional planning, instructional delivery, assessment, data analysis, student discipline, classroom management and utilization of curricular resources
- Observes classroom activities, including, but not limited to instruction, student learning, and classroom management in order to assist the principal in teacher evaluations and provide teachers with feedback
- Build day to day instructional capacity of classroom teachers to deliver core instruction
- Supports implementation of curriculum and resources including internalization of units and lessons
- In collaboration with the Dual Language Coordinator and leadership team, supports the implementation of Dual Language curriculum
- Provide differentiated instructional support by working directly with teachers in the classroom to model effective, research-based instructional practices
- Completes weekly walkthroughs and observations of teachers and records
- Works collaboratively with grade level teams to drive data-informed instructional planning
- Use multiple data sources to plan, implement and facilitate professional development
- Collaborate in the development of an MTSS team
- Supports the MTSS team on the analysis of the T2/T3 progress monitoring data in order to decide on the next steps or the next layers of support
Climate & Culture
Assists Principal with:
- Providing oversight of the practices, policies, and protocols set forth in Erie Elementary Parent
Handbook to ensure that they are maintained by students, families, and staff
- Implementation of our school-wide approach to discipline and assists teachers and support staff with the social emotional learning curriculum and development of students
- Directing and coordinating teacher supervision of lunchrooms, shared spaces, hallways, and playgrounds
- Responding to inquiries and concerns from students, parents and guardians, and the general public concerning school operating policies and procedures
- Helping students reflect upon and resolve school related problems
- Maintains high standards of student conduct by focusing on prevention, communication with parents, and high expectations of conduct
Human Resource Management
Assists Principal with:
- Interviewing and recommending instructional candidates for employment
- Making arrangements for and overseeing substitute teachers at the school
- Facilitating the orientation of new and returning personnel
Professional Responsibilities
- Participate in committees and initiatives that advance student learning and Erie’s Mission and Vision
- Initiate and pursue professional development opportunities both inside and outside of the school
- Remain open to constructive feedback, coaching, and continual development; including making your practice public within the school
- Work collaboratively with all staff to uphold a strong culture of learning
- Attend all staff meetings and additional meetings as needed; including in-services, open houses and parent conferences
- Attend weekly meeting with principal and team meetings
- Clearly and accurately communicates with administration, colleagues and larger academic community to improve academic outcomes for all students
- Exhibits professionalism, leadership, and personal responsibility for daily work and attendance, personal appearance, student learning and school success
- Other duties, responsibilities, and special projects as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
- Credentials: Professional Educator License with General Administrative Endorsement
- Master’s Degree with a concentration in Elementary and/or Middle School Education preferred
- Minimum of five years successful teaching experience with Elementary Education
- Supervisory experience preferred
- Bilingual (English/Spanish fluency) required
- Experience teaching or leading in a Spanish dual language setting preferred
- Familiarity with Responsive Classroom, trauma-informed practices, and restorative practices preferred
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills to support communication among school staff, community partners, parents, and other team members, required.
- Proven track record of academic progress of students both in the classroom and in a leadership capacity
- Thorough knowledge of child development and best practices of elementary education
- Passionate about urban education and demonstrated expertise in building a positive school culture
