Salary/Wage
Starting salary range: $70,408.54 – $111,872.37 annually.

Academic training and teaching experience will form the basis for salary computation as determined by placement on the regular salary schedule of the College. A maximum of step 8 at the appropriate salary grade will be awarded to new faculty. Primary Function
The Assistant Professor, American Indian Studies is primarily responsible for teaching a variety of courses, online, synchronous, and/or hybrid, in the discipline of Native American/American Indian Studies, utilizing Indigenous epistemologies and methodologies.

The American Indian Studies Department welcomes applications from American Indian Studies/Native American, Indigenous Studies, Ethnic Studies, and related fields, with expertise in a wide variety of disciplinary and research foci, including tribal community governance; sovereignty and nationhood; decolonization and anti-colonialisms; environmental justice and sustainability; language and culture reclamation and revitalization; cultural geographies and/or philosophies; women, two-spirit, and gender studies; agency, activisms, and political struggles; anti-Indigenous racisms; and/or equity, access, inclusion, and empowerment.

Minimum Qualifications
Must meet one of the sets of qualifications listed under 1) through 3):
  • A Master’s degree in Native American/American Indian Studies.
  • A Master’s degree in Ethnic Studies AND a Bachelor’s degree in Native American/American Indian studies.
  • A combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent of the qualifications in either 1) or 2) above. You must complete and attach the Application for Equivalency form (www.palomar.edu/hr/equivalency-app/), if you do not possess the specific minimum qualifications as stated above, which includes degrees that have not been awarded at the time of submitting the application.


Only coursework completed at, and degrees awarded by, accredited institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education will be considered as satisfying the minimum qualifications.   • Experience working with reservation and/or urban Native American communities.
  • Evidence of coursework and research in the discipline of Native American/American Indian Studies and supporting disciplines.

Duties and Responsibilities
In addition to the teaching responsibilities, other duties and institutional responsibilities include:
  • Significant extracurricular interaction and collaboration with America Indian students, local tribes, American Indian organizations, other American Indian Studies departments, and the college tribal liaison.
  • Teach courses in assigned discipline by communicating subject matter clearly and effectively.
  • Deliver instruction in accordance with the course objectives and student learning outcomes set for the course.
  • Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles.
  • Meet record keeping obligations on time, (e.g. grades, census, reports, rosters, requisitions), and textbook orders, with an emphasis on low-cost/zero-cost textbooks and open education resources.
  • Develop and manage course curriculum, syllabus materials and lesson plans
  • Attend and participate in department, division and college meetings and maintain regular office hours.
  • Facilitate part-time time faculty evaluations, high school articulation, program review and planning, development and assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Support departmental efforts, particularly around growing and building a new A.A. degree program in American Indian Studies.
