JOB DESCRIPTION

ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT - EDUCATIONAL SERVICES


The Assistant Superintendent-Educational Services is responsible for supervising the development, planning implementation and evaluation of the K-12 education program. Provides leadership for the instructional program; provides support to schools in implementing district adopted curriculum, staff development, and instructional improvement programs; coordinates and supervises the curriculum development and textbook selection process, the district testing program, and grant writing and monitoring. This is a designated management position that reports to the Superintendent. Oversees the District's compliance with guidelines, mandates and regulations governing instructional matters. Provides leadership and participates in the district's efforts to achieve educational excellence for students. Serves on the Superintendent's Cabinet.

Directly Responsible to: Superintendent

Supervision over: Certificated and classified staff as assigned including:

  • Principals
  • Exceptional Student Services Supervisor
  • Federal Projects Director
  • Native Language and Culture Coordinator

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Serves as a member of the Superintendent's Cabinet. • Supervises the development of curricula, courses of study, brochures, catalogues, parent handbooks, manuals, and other instructional materials.
  • Monitors the goals, objectives, and content of district curricula.
  • Provides leadership and support to building principals and teachers in implementing curriculum instruction and assessment.
  • Provides curriculum information and research data on topics related to instruction.
  • Coordinates and supervises the selection process for instructional resources.
  • Represents the district in matters related to instruction to the general public, specific groups and individuals.
  • Prepares reports on all aspects of the district's instructional and assessment programs.
  • Coordinates all district testing programs.
  • Coordinates staff development efforts to support curriculum, instruction, and assessments.
  • Manages and monitors instructional and categorical budgets as assigned.
  • Coordinates all district accreditations/state program reviews.
  • Serves as district's 504 Compliance Officer.
  • Serves on the district's negotiating team.
  • Administers new teacher programs.
  • Coordinates Site Plans with all schools.
  • Evaluates personnel as appropriate
  • Coordinates and supervises the district's student discipline and expulsion programs.
  • Participates in administrative meetings as needed.
  • Participates in the selection and evaluation of administrative personnel.

  • Monitors, interprets, and evaluates federal, state, and local legislation, codes, and regulations to ensure compliance in the assigned areas of responsibility for the district.
  • Attends all Board of Education meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Training, Education and Experience: Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to a Masters degree or higher from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in educational administration; extensive experience with school laws, public administration, and increasingly responsible experience in educational administration in a public-school setting.

KNOWLEDGEAND SKILLS:

Knowledge of and skills in interpreting applicable federal and state laws, and developing districts policies and procedures; knowledge of current principles and methods of public school management; comprehensive knowledge of school law, and school district organization. Ability to plan, organize, coordinate, and direct a variety of complex technical operations involving efforts of multiple specialized units of a broad management program fora large school district; ability to collect, interpret, and analyze complex technical data, as well as identify potential problems, evaluate alternative solutions, and prepare sound recommendations; ability to make complex decisions, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Must be able to communicate orally and in writing in both English and Spanish.


EDUCATION:

Equivalent to the completion of a Master of Arts, Master of Business Administration or higher degree from an accredited college or university in personnel administration; educational administration, curriculum and instruction, instructional technology, or closely related field.


CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT:

Possess a valid Arizona Administrative services credential.
