Summary
The physical medicine & rehabilitation (PM&R) residency program at Mary Free Bed serves as a major component of the institution’s education mission. The program currently trains four residents per year, in an advanced (PGY-2 to PGY-4) training environment, with clinical sites located predominantly in the greater Grand Rapids metropolitan area and surrounding communities. The program is affiliated with the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine (CHM), Grand Rapids campus.
The residency Program Director, in conjunction with the program’s faculty, provide oversight for the residency program’s curriculum, in addition to maintaining a clinical practice within the Mary Free Bed Medical Group. The Associate Program Director assists the Program Director in program administration, leadership, faculty development, curricula development, maintaining a rich training environment, and ensuring compliance with ACGME program requirements. The Associate Program Director will report to the Program Director for residency-related tasks, and to Medical Group leadership for clinical responsibilities and duties.
Essential Job Responsibilities
General Responsibilities:
- In conjunction with Program Director, oversee and maintain quality of didactic and clinical education in the program’s training environments
- Participate in resident & faculty evaluation, decisions related to promotion and continued participation within the program
- Support the Program Director in preparing and submitting required information requested by the ACGME, adhering to all requirements as prescribed by the ACGME
- Designing, implementing, and enforcing policies that maintain a supportive training environment
- Understand and follow all institutional and Medical Group policies
- Understand, follow, and implement all ACGME and Residency Review Committee policies & procedures

Program Administration Responsibilities:
- Participate in resident didactics, Morbidity & Mortality (M&M) sessions, Journal Club sessions
- Attend all Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) meetings
- Attend all Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) meetings
- Attend all Program Evaluation Committee (PEC) meetings
- Participate in mid-year and end-of-year meetings with residents to review milestone progress
- Participate in Program Self-Study
- Participate in ACGME Site Visits, Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) Visits
- Review residency candidate applications and serve as a primary interviewer for the residency program
- Participate in new resident orientation
- Administer structured feedback to residents as designated by the Program Director
- Intervene in faculty and resident concerns as designated by the Program Director
- Participate in planning and supporting resident wellness activities
- Assist in selection and mentorship of Chief Residents
- Participate in scholarly activity / research with the goal of presenting research on a regular basis (poster presentation, podium presentation, peer-reviewed journal publication)
- Draft letters of recommendation in support of current residents’ fellowship applications and current medical students’ residency applications (as appropriate)
Professional Organization Participation
- Participate in at least one national professional organization conference per year (with educational stipend provided)
- Participate in discussions and workshops with PM&R program directors and associate program directors on a national basis
Customer Service Responsibilities
Demonstrate excellent customer service and standards of behaviors as well as encourages, coaches, and monitors the same in team members. This individual should consistently promote teamwork and direct communication with co-workers and deal discretely and sensitively with confidential information.
Responsibilities in Quality Improvement
Contribute by identifying problems and seeking solutions. Promote patient/family satisfaction where possible; participates in departmental efforts to monitor and report customer service.
Essential Job Qualifications
The Associate Program Director is a physician who is certified by the American Board for Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and must be eligible for an unrestricted medical license in the State of Michigan. Preferred candidates will have demonstrated experience in curriculum development, evaluation methods, educational methods, and mentorship. They also bring experience in the combination of patient care, education, and scholarly activity to serve as a strong role model of an academic physiatrist.
