At a Glance: What you will be doing: Our Automotive Mechanic performs services and repairs of automobiles, motorized equipment, small equipment, and heavy construction or related equipment. This position will perform a variety of duties in relation to automobile repair, small equipment repair, preventative maintenance, and custodial equipment repair.

Who you are: We are looking for a self-motivated Automotive Mechanic that does well working independatly. This person will be interacting with a diverse campus population and should enjoy working with others to provide excellent customer service in a timely manner.

Who we are: The Maintenance team is a diverse group of people with various skills including carpentery, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, etc. We strive for collaboration, communication, and a supportive team environment.

This position is classified as an Automotive Mechanic and will directly report to the Maintenance Supervisor. The typical schedule for this position is Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm. The Automotive Mechanic will occasionally be required to work overtime in order to meet the needs of the College.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities

Automobiles Repair/Preventive Maintenance Work:

  • Change oil and filter (12 vehicles); 2003 Dodge Intrepid, 1997 Ford Taurus, 2006 Ford Taurus, 995 Chevy Flatbed, 1990 Dodge dump truck, 2008 Ford 12 passenger van, 2007 Chevy 15 passenger van, 1998 Ford 15 passenger van, (2) athletics 12 Passenger Van and one Athletic Bus
  • Check batteries
  • Replace bulbs, lights, fuses, signal lights, etc.
  • Replace spark plugs
  • Change/add antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, etc.
  • Change tires, adjust brakes, distributors, etc.
  • Wash, wax and clean interior and exteriors of motorized vehicles
  • Overhaul and rebuild gas and diesel engines
  • Repair and/or replace wheel bearings, drive shafts
  • Rewire electrical circuits on carts and autos
  • Repair and replace brake shoes, brake cylinders, and master cylinders on carts and autos
  • Work on vehicle transmissions
  • Weld, repair and replace catalytic convertors on multiple vehicles
  • Use battery charger for carts and vehicles, replace chargers in carts
  • Use welder, grinders, bearing press, hoist, drills, drill press
  • Field inspections of equipment to determine maintenance and repairs needed

Equipment Repair/Preventive Maintenance Work:

  • Make repairs and maintain small air-cooled engines i.e., Mowers, Edger, Chainsaws
  • Maintain and repair electric Utility Carts (10)
  • Maintain Boom lift, Scissor lift, and Single person lift
  • Maintain motor oil levels, pack bearings with grease, replace shaft bearings
  • Maintain and replace motors as needed
  • Maintain, service, and repair custodial equipment
  • Hydraulic cylinder repairs and replacement on equipment
  • Cart battery diagnostics and replacement

Housekeeping/Administrative Work:

  • Keep shop and work area clean
  • Schedule annual lift inspection
  • Keep maintenance records in computerized maintenance management system (CMMS)
  • Schedule vehicles with office staff

Other duties as assigned

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid driver's license
  • Previous work experience in similar equipment technician or automobile field
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Time management skills
  • Ability to perform tasks (not directly) around children ages 0-5, while ensuring safety and appropriate interactions
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Experience using computers and technology

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • ASE Certifications
  • Certification in any of the following; small engines repair, light truck repairs, equipment repair, or related.
  • Experience with a computerized maintenance management system
  • Experience with engine repair, automatic transmission/transaxle, manual drive train & axles, suspension & steering, brakes, electrical/electronic systems, heating & air conditioning, engine performance, light vehicle diesel engines, auto maintenance and light repair, automobile advanced engine performance.
