GENERAL PURPOSE:
The Automotive Technician I performs semi-skilled and skilled work in maintaining the city vehicles and mechanical equipment. This position repairs, maintains, and services all vehicles, heavy equipment, and light equipment. This work is performed under close supervision – the incumbent is assigned duties according to specified procedures and receives detailed instructions; work is checked frequently and is reviewed through observation, completion of work orders, and review of results achieved.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
NOTE: The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position or to reasonably accommodate individuals with disabilities.
Analyze and diagnose units to determine extent of repairs required; replace worn or broken parts under the guidance of higher grade technicians; perform scheduled preventive maintenance and respond to emergency repairs.
Assist other personnel as needed to include moving or transporting city vehicles to, from outside vendors, and within city locations.
Evaluate status of mechanical equipment, small engines, and vehicles and perform or schedule needed repairs.
Complete repairs and maintenance on small engine, light and heavy vehicles, heavy equipment, fire apparatus, and all other city owned equipment.
Maintain shop equipment.
Recommend the purchase of parts and supplies used for vehicles, small engines, and mechanical system maintenance.
Perform other work as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of departmental and municipal rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Working knowledge of automotive mechanics; working knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, valves and small engine repair.
Working knowledge of occupational hazards, safety rules, and practices of the work.
Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.
Ability to establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance and to carry out assigned projects to their completion.
Ability to read and understand operator and repair manuals.
Ability to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled manual tasks.
Ability to safely operate a variety of automotive vehicles, light equipment, various hand and power tools.
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, supervisors, city officials, and the general public.
Ability to communicate information tactfully and impartially, both in person and in writing with all staff, city officials, and the general public.
Ability to demonstrate proficiency in the City of Winter Park Core Competencies.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and keep accurate records.
This position is performed with working knowledge – the incumbent has ability to recall and apply important and commonly-used information from relevant source documents or information in a particular subject field.
Automotive Technician I-
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or equivalent; supplemented by a minimum of one year of experience maintaining and repairing gasoline, diesel, and other small engines.
Must provide adequate tools to perform technician’s duties as required.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities and other competencies required for the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATIONS, TRAINING, SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver’s License, Class B or higher with air brake endorsement, or have a CDL Permit and the ability to get the license within six months of hire.
NOTE: All required certifications must be current at the time of application and maintained in an active state as a condition of continued employment.
Automotive Technician II-
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or equivalent; supplemented by a minimum of four years of experience maintaining and repairing gasoline, diesel, and other small engines.
Must provide adequate tools to perform technician’s duties as required.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities and other competencies required for the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATIONS, TRAINING, SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver’s License, Class B or higher with air brake endorsement, or have a CDL Permit and the ability to get the license within six months of hire.
Obtain three Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications within six months of hire.
NOTE: All required certifications must be current at the time of application and maintained in an active state as a condition of continued employment.
Automotive Technician III-
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or equivalent; supplemented by a minimum of seven years of experience maintaining and repairing gasoline, diesel, and other small engines.
Possess two Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) tests or possess an associate’s degree in automotive or diesel mechanics. Four additional years of experience may be substituted for the ASE tests and requirements of vocational education.
Must provide adequate tools to perform technician’s duties as required.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities and other competencies required for the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATIONS, TRAINING, SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Physical
This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force repetitively to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping.
Ability to ascend/descend stairs, scaffolds, and ladders.
Ability to traverse about a variety of environments and obstacles throughout the city, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Ability to remain stationary at jobsites for extended periods of time and repetitively operate related equipment for repairs/maintenance.
Ability to position oneself to work in confined or difficult to reach spaces.
Ability to manipulate objects, demonstrate small, precise movements, and operate necessary equipment such as small hand and power tools repetitively or continuously.
Environmental
Tasks may require frequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions including inclement weather, sun, extreme temperatures, odors, dirt and dust, loud noises, and hazardous chemicals, etc.
Sensory
Tasks require the manipulation of objects and demonstration of small, precise movements, the ability to detect and distinguish various features of one’s surroundings, and the ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with others.
