York County Animal Shelter is looking for a new member to join our team! Our shelter is an open intake government shelter with a high-life saving focus. The average intake is 4000 animals a year. Our live out rate last year averaged 94%.

We invite you to apply to join our team as a full-time (40 hours per week), Behavior and Placement Coordinator within the Animal Services Department. This newly created position will primarily focus on providing, creating and implementing socialization and behavior modification plans for dogs and cats at York County Animal Control. This position is also responsible for instructing shelter staff on appropriate placement recommendations as well as leading training for animal adoption staff, volunteers, and public in animal behavior.

Work Schedule: 8:30 am -5:30 pm or 9 am -6 pm. Position includes occasional on call, weekends, and evenings.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
~ Identifies behavioral needs of individual animals and implements specific positive based behavior modification, training, and enrichment plans to address those needs.
~ Provides accurate behavioral assessments using the Dogs Playing for Life model, Meet Your Match (MYM), and Behavior Observation to identify behavioral needs and play styles for playgroups.
~ Creates, maintains, and updates behavioral records/profiles in Chameleon database, Excel, and Word documents.
~ Provides playgroups for all eligible canines in our care based on the Dogs Playing for Life model.
~ Coordinates and implements daily enrichment program for shelter animals.
~ Develops and conducts training programs for staff, volunteers, and public as directed by Animal Services Director.
~ Communicates with staff and volunteers via in person, telephone, and email to assist with behavioral concerns.

Other Duties:
~ Attends training as required to enhance job knowledge and skills.

ABOUT YOU - Experience and Education
Completion of an Associate"s degree and three (3) years of related experience.
Must be at least 18 years old.
Certifications and Licenses
Must possess valid state driver"s license or other valid form of identification.
Preferred Education and Experience
Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT) certification preferred.
One (1) year experience in an animal shelter setting preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities/Attributes

Knowledge:
~ Knowledge of common behavior problems in companion animals as well as positive based reinforcement learning theory.
~ Knowledge of the Dogs Playing for Life or other dog playgroup models.

Skills, Abilities and Attributes:
~ Ability to plan and execute programs relating to behavioral modification and training using positive reinforcement methods.
~ Ability to humanely handle dogs and cats of all breeds, sizes, and temperaments.
~ Ability to diffuse animal altercations using humane safety tools.
~ Ability to present material orally and in writing to a variety of audiences.
~ Ability to work effectively and efficiently as part of a team or independently on assigned tasks.
~ Ability to accept direction on given assignments.
~ Ability to be diplomatic and informative. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical & Dexterity Requirements:
Requires work involving standing, walking, gripping or feeling with hands, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, and kneeling, crouching, or crawling and talking or hearing over 2/3 of the time; tasting or smelling 1/3 to 2/3 of the time; and sitting and climbing or balancing less than 1/3 of the time. Requires lifting up to 25 pounds over 2/3 of the time; up to 50 pounds 1/3 to 2/3 of the time; and more than 100 pounds under 1/3 of the time.

Vision Requirements:
Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors); Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up or down or to the left and right when vision is fixed on a given point). Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships); Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
