JOB TITLE: Boiler Operator
SHIFT: Days / 1st, 2nd, 3rd
REPORTS TO: Maintenance Manager

SUMMARY:
The Maintenance Technician will oversee the performance and maintenance of various large production machinery.
Responsibilities and Requirements: Require; class 1,2, and 3 license
  • Boiler Operator independently operates and maintains utility plant equipment and systems with minimal supervision; maintains one or multiple gas/propane fired water or fire tube boilers equipped with electronic controls and associated auxiliary control equipment; operates a boiler feed water treatment plant and tests the water, adding proper chemicals to boiler feed water if necessary.
  • Must be able to inspect competently: all boiler controls, combustion equipment, water leveler regulation, steam regulators, 0-2 recorder, automatic 0-2 trim systems, safety devices, instruments, flow meters, feed pumps, gas regulators, automatic controls, and air regulators. Maintain constant observation of the meters, charts, gauges, water levels, and temperatures to ensure that all systems are functioning properly. Read and record temperatures, pressures, and operating data as required within a boiler plant.
  • Must have knowledge of equipment assembly, and installation repairs; must be able to perform repairs on boilers, chillers, and related equipment, such as replacing bearings, packing, and mechanical seals in pumps both liquid transfer and vacuum. Install and maintain all auxiliary air conditioning equipment consisting of chill water pumps, glycol circulating pumps, cooling towers, control air compressors, refrigerated /desiccants type air-dryers, pneumatic/electric control valves, variable frequency drives, digital pneumatic variable air volume boxes, electronic air filters, electric/steam humidifiers, automatic/manual water treatment systems, exhaust fans, air-balancing accessories.
  • Perform minor steam fitting, plumbing, electrical work, painting, and housekeeping of the boiler plant. Ability to interpret instructions, and specifications operating procedures: Determine proper chemicals to be added to the water in the proper proportions in which they are to be added to prevent corrosion and scale formation. Add chemicals to the chiller system and record test results and chemicals added. Perform adjustments and corrections to boilers based on recorded inspection date. Performs preventive maintenance inspections and service on machines.
  • Thoroughly cleans machines and machine parts, removing parts and reinstalling, as necessary.
  • Oils and lubricates moving parts on machines to ensure effective performance.
  • Records and reports damaged, worn, or broken parts.
  • Orders and installs replacement parts for machines.
  • Identifies the causes of unexpected breakdowns of machines.
  • Repairs broken machines quickly and efficiently.
  • Prepares reports documenting work performed.
  • Cleans, organizes, inventories, stocks, and otherwise maintains shop areas, parts, tools, and supplies.
  • Coordinates with managers to schedule regular maintenance on machines.
  • Collaborates with the product manager or plant engineer regarding new products being added and modifications that will be required.
  • Makes necessary modifications and implements test runs; confers with product manager regarding test results and makes additional alterations to machinery as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Mechanically inclined with great problem-solving skills.
  • Works well independently and with others.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Organized with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and stressful environment.
  • Boiler operator with class 1, 2, or 3 licenses from the city of Omaha
  • Vast experience or journeyman’s license
EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE:
Some vocational or community colleges with related coursework or equivalent experience, require.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • Able to bend, stretch, push, pull, and move as needed to reach, clean, and service machinery.
  • Must be able to visually inspect machines.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment:
  • The environment that individuals will be working in can fluctuate. Employees will be required to stand for anywhere between 4 – 6 hours, sometimes on a platform. They will frequently have to push, pull or lift to 30 pounds and occasionally push, pull, or lift to 50 pounds. Sharp objects such as knives, hooks, steel, and saws are utilized to perform the duties listed herein. The noise level is often loud, and hearing protection must be worked at all times. Additional PPE that may be required are safety glasses, mesh gloves/aprons, frocks, steel-toed boots, hard hats, face shields, surgical masks, and, in some cases, fall protection.
